Everyone should stop at a Buc-ees once just to see the size of the store, generally they have over 100 gas pumps, you will never find a larger or cleaner restroom than at a Buc-ees, your wife and daughter will thank you.
Love their brisket sandwich that they make daily at each location.
My wife likes to shop the nik naks like the shirts and stuff, they are all high quality shirts and last for years at a decent price.

It would be a nightmare. The one on I-10 at the Gulf Shores, AL exit literally backs traffic up on the interstate. That tourist trap can stay south for all I care.
Build one off the new interchange they are putting in on 80/35 coming from the east or put on in by the new Costco in Ankeny and it would not cause problems. Plenty of room at both locations to build a Buc-ees.

I must be the weird one in the group, the only time I enter a convenience store is when I'm going on 2+ hour road trip and then it's to grab a pop. I never get food at a convenience store. 99% of the time, I just pay at the pump and leave.

I have been to Buc-ee's one time and was impressed.

I prefer the Casey's business model that has the bathroom behind the counter. Make sure you are up-to-date on all your shots before you enter.
Are there still restrooms across america that have a key chained to some object that gets you into restrooms?

Casey's around lunch time is packed with workers grabbing some food on the go.

If they hand you a key and say you have to go outside around the back to get to the restroom, I usually hand the key back and go somewhere else. Chances are that bathroom hasn't been cleaned in at least two weeks.

Not sure if there are many of those around still.

From a food service standpoint, I try to use the cleanliness of the bathrooms of a restaurant to determine how clean their kitchen is. A family friend who used to run a restaurant told me that if the bathroom is dirty, the kitchen is likely bad too.

Seems to me that a Casey's/HyVee merger would be a match made in heaven...;) Similar business plans and management styles.
Add in Pizza Ranch. They seem to be heading the same direction as well.

Looks like as of March 1st 2024 there are 48 Buc-ees, the vast majority in the South, manly in Texas. Closest one to Iowa would be Springfield Mo, but they have plans to build one in Wisconsin, Illinois and KC Kansas.

I think the people who live in small towns tend to rely on them more for meals.

If I'm traveling, at this point, I'm more likely to get meals at a gas station (when I'm actually getting gas) because it saves having to make the extra stop at a restaurant.

We ran into an "outside restroom with a counter key" in Alamosa CO on our way to New Mexico last month. After waiting outside for a good 5 minutes for whoever was inside to finish my wife and I decided neither of us wanted to go into that room. Had to drive another 15 minute to find a restroom but did not regret the decision.

I think some of you would be amazed at the food at Wawa or Sheetz.
I go to the East coast frequently and those two are great.

Don’t even need to go that far east. There’s Sheetz in the Columbus, OH burbs now. Which is a welcome addition so I never have to step foot on Speedway or Duchess property again. I’ll drive the extra 15 to get there rain or snow to even just get a Snickers.
