Behind you
One went to Pizza Ranch when one had no other options. The business model was to put franchises in towns that were too small for a Pizza Hut, and it worked marvelously. They’ve transitioned to bigger cities and, via buffet, probably bigger margins (and something not offered at other places). I’m hardly an expert, but the food quality seems to have stayed consistent (mediocre).
They were affordable, kids liked it, and they catered to kids' Bday parties.

Dont know about terrible, but its not in my top 5. The chicken and broasted potatoes are where I hang my hat for sure.
Just my opinion, but i feel like PR puts a little more effort into the specialty/nontraditional pizzas. If it's just straight beef or pepperoni, it's just thrown together, always overcooked and turning to leather under the heat lamp. Not all pizza from PR is horrendously bad, but there are better options. I also have very low self esteem and consume whatever is out there.

Did you go to Pizza Ranch for pizza? The only reason to go to PR is the fired chicken. Pizza is terrible, bread sticks are fine, desert pizza is good. But when fresh, they have the best fried chicken.
Is it ever fresh?

Yes, almost always unless you're hitting up a buffet at 3:30 in the afternoon.
I have been to several around the metro and other parts of the state. My kids like it. I have always felt it was hit or miss. Yes time matters some, but I have found it most of them have went down hill, esp. since 2020.

If you like the bbq chicken, its almost never fresh. Some are definitely better than others, and a lot of that comes down to workers etc.

Our local ones
Our local one closes randomly, mid afternoon, mornings, who knows. Reasons from anything lack of workers, pumps not working, systems down, etc.
seem to be pretty well managed. Employees are definitely "entry-level", but are courteous and efficient. They sometimes have pumps not working, but over-all they're OK. I've never seen them be closed except an extreme circumstance like a power outage.

Every time I hear about convenience store I think someone is going to buy up Allsups at some point. Gas Station Pizza is to Caseys like a Gas Station Burrito is to Allsups. There are a few things I miss about San Angelo - Allsups is one of them.

Back to Caseys agreed the indoors of the more established places is getting a bit rough and doesn't quite have the plan in place to upgrade the old BP modelled "gas station" so I am guessing these will just be more of that, "hey you can now sell Pizza" type of deal.

When Kwik Trip bought PDQ (the snickerdoodle cheesecake cookies being gone still hurts) they bought some really dumpy locations and it took them a while to get them up to snuff.

As for Buc-ees it is more like an Iowa 80 truck stop type of thing the food just doesn't hit for me. Lots of options on jerky though and half the stores are just crap Buc-ees swag.

Casey’s fountain soda 5 years ago tasted awful. But in the last year or two they have been upgrading it store to store, so I’ll often stop by for a fountain drink.

Those breakfast burritos and the breakfast tacos from Stripes in small town Texas just hit different. I spent 5 years between San Angelo and Abilene and any time I visit I make sure to stop and get them at least once.

When I worked at one 15+ years ago the BBQ chicken was the leftover buffet chicken from the day before with bbq sauce slathered on it.
