Campbell era: Your 5-year expectation

That's fair. I think we're both thinking tOSU is his next destination.
I think if Ohio State is his next destination, he'll be here a LONG time. Ohio State can hire whoever they want to hire. See Meyer, Urban. The chances they would hire Campbell any time in the next 10 years, as a 36-45 year old coach with no ties to the University are zero, absent him ripping off multiple 9-12 win seasons. I personally don't see that happening.

IMO, if he gets us consistently to bowl wins with an 8 win season here and there, he's performed at a level that should meet anyone's expectations.

Well then let's hope Meyer doesn't go all "woody hayes" and OSU steals another coach from us.

Earle Bruce was an Ohio State grad, had played for Woody Hayes and then had coached under Woody Hayes for 6 seasons. Ohio State, with it's current position in the college football world, it's access to the state which is in the top 5 states producing D1 players, the top 3 in football revenue, and it's status in the B10, can hire anyone it wants to. I just don't think Campbell will be a candidate absent ripping off 10-12 win seasons at Iowa State.

I really like CMC but he's no Snyder. Holding him to an expectation even close to that will bring nothing but disappointment.

Could we compare him to Gary Pinkel? Or Pat Fitzgerald? Or Mike Leach? Or Kirk Ferentz? Gary Barnett? ....

I absolutely love the guy as a recruiter and getting the fan base excited but I still haven't seen results on field yet. Now with that said, I'll give him 3 more years. If he can something good he'll start getting inquiries from other places. I know he's from Ohio and all but who's to say he doesn't stick around and make Ames his forever home. Kind of like how Ferentz did at EIU.

You must not be watching the same games I am. There were 5 games last year where the margin of victory was less than 1 TD and they only won 1 of them. The ball bounces ISU's way in all of those games and suddenly they are 7-5 going bowling. I have definitely seen results on the field, they just haven't crossed over into more W's...yet.

The ship is pointed in the right direction and we have a confident captain telling them what to do. All they have to do is ROW THE BOAT (oops, wrong coach/team).

I think we should hope he goes above 500 in the next season or two.

That means bowls.

Then GOOD bowls.

I hope Campbell doesn't have a case of that McCarney loseclosegamesitis.

I am watching the exact same guys as you are and was impressed with what was accomplished on the field last season. Still, it was only 3 wins on the season. Do I think he can and will do better? Yes I do. He's accomplished more in 2 seasons of actual recruiting then has done in recent history. He's got momentum, now I just need to see him get over the hump and pull out some of the close ones.

In year 5 I would like to see the program at least where McCarney had it 2000-2005. Yes, McCarney underachieved, especially 2004-2006, ESPECIALLY 2005, but we made bowl games in 5 of 6 years in that stretch and was the exact expectation most of you want to hold Campbell to (6-7 wins). Bonus points if he can get us an 8+ win season.

My take on when Campbell leaves - obviously he really wants the OSU job - virtually any Ohioan would. Part of me thinks Campbell holds out for OSU, but the other part of me questions whether ISU is a high enough stepping stone for OSU. I guess what I'm trying to say is as much as he likes it in Ames, Campbell probably isn't going to finish his career here, and as long as he's moving the program in the right direction I'm not going to worry about it.

We have a couple Iowa State football coaches that left Iowa State and won a National Championship at their next school. Majors and Chizik. And another Coach lost in the National Championship Game......Earle Bruce. That is a pretty good record.

Campbell will take us to a Bowl almost every year. Most years with 6 or 7 wins. Occasionally 8 or 9. Possible of dream season if the stars align.

Let's just hope Campbell can do something this fall that Mac made a regular habit of - beating Iowa. Last year's game was awful.
There is awful and then there is that. They could have scored 100 on us if they really wanted to. It reminded me of that Baylor game a few years back. Just totally out coached.

Meh.

The fanbase deserves more than a 2nd week rivalry win here and there. If he beats Iowa and has some emotional post-game conference ala CPR I'm going to start my own coaching search and *sending Pollard emails from all directions.
*(not really)

The habit needs to be winning minimum 6 wins on the schedule, and belonging on the field with OU's of the world...that's really the only way you beat them.

Maybe the question should be how much can we pay him and the assistants if we get to 8,9, or 10 plus wins? With TV revenue it seems we are in a much better comparative position than we were 10 years ago. If we are successful, with potential realignment, we have millions of incentive to pay a coach to keep us in a "power" conference.

Success at ISU is basically a double edged sword because on 1 hand it means we finally found a coach that can win at one of the hardest places in the country to build a consistent winner but on the flip side of that any coach that can do that is probably going to be highly sought after, especially a coach as young and energetic as Campbell is. The optimistic part of me says if the man pulls off a 9 or 10 win season by year 5 and you have bigger schools offering far more money you pay the man whatever it takes to keep him at ISU and try to build a new winning tradition at ISU when so many more before him have failed. Our fan base is great and I think so starved for a winning program that if the product on the field is good this fan base will rally around it and support it financially. It already is one of the more loyal fan bases in the country for supporting a program that by most outside opinions would say is a perennial doormat of the conference most years. Just look at the support the basketball program got when it was winning under Larry and Fred, granted ISU has been more competitive in basketball over the years but the support was at it's highest when the program was the most competitive that it has been. The recovery time when the reset button is pushed is far longer with the FB program than it is with the BB program which is why if Campbell gets this program to the point our fans are hoping for I think we have to do whatever it takes to keep him here even if it means a large financial commitment.
