That's what the training I did said too. If you aren't close to breaking ribs, you aren't going hard enough. Should probably go through that training again, expired a while ago.

The one I was trained on had a pictogram (in the top) of each step;, got to know where to put the pads and what button to push, machine does the rest. Then let it monitor until medical professionals get there. It knew when to Zap, or not Zap, and would Zap again it the situation warranted.
Edit: It also controlled the "power" of the Zap, again based on the situation of the patient.
If intubated, not you cannot talk. That's where writing would come up.
