Bring back Larry

I'm not completely jumping on the fire GMAC bandwagon yet, but I will say that LE's teams would never have been out hustled or out rebounded. Regardless of the players/talent he had out there, they hustled their ***** off the entire time.

Different styles...coaches emphasize different things. Larry's were 1)Rebound 2)Get Back 3)Team Together

It pisses me off too seeing the lack of rebounding as that is my style too, but McD puts more of his emphasis on perimeter shooting and stretching the defense than rebounding

Please remember Larry won 12 games the season after Tinsley left...

Tim and Jamaal had 10x more to do with Larry's success here than he did. At least Larry took pride in what he did and showed some pride and leadership. That seems to be missing a bit...

With all do respect to Larry, he drank Miller Lite. It was Kroenke and the Missouri students who had the Natural Light at the party. But trust me Larry in a robe smoking a cig stating he was Hugh Hefner was some funny stuff.

The day LE went down was the day his best friend in Ames Pete Taylor died.

Yep. After that it was open season on Eustachy as far the university administration was concerned. I remember seeing the famous pics at some mizzou web site weeks before the register printed them.

Morningside?

They would have been outplayed many times. I think the records show that.

I know it's not popular to be something other than a Larry fan. That's fine. I'm just not impressed with him.
Wasn't the Morningside game one of the first games of the season as opposed to a game in late December?

My point is that LE teams improved over the course of the season which is the hallmark of a well coached team.

I never was for Larry's removal. I got quite heated between Cyclone fans in the spring of 03.' I had to stop a near fight between fans over the issue. One year in rehab for LArry would have done it (Wayne HC in 03-04) then Larry with Wayne on his side back the next year.

I can see that Wayne Morgan's removal is also starting to pay dividends as well. I never have been a McDermott fan.

Like Larry or not, the downfall of ISU basketball can be traced back to the 2nd round (our 1st game) of the BigXII tournament in spring of 2001. We lost to Baylor. Despite that pathetic loss, we were still a #2 seed in the NCAA, where everybody knows what happened. Very little good has happened to us since then. I got to thinking about it last night as I realized that a loss to Baylor began the avalanche. Baylor, perennial doormat of the BigXII. Baylor, who two years AFTER that had one teammate murder another over a drug deal gone bad, lost their coach, numerous penalties and a postseason ban, etc. etc. Now, after all of that, Baylor is in the top half of the conference and we are still bouncing around between the 10 and 12 spots. And that makes me very sad.

It definitely isn't the American Dream.

I think it goes back about a year earlier. After a great season and a run to the Elite Eight, (coupled with a coach blow up on national TV) LE did not gain even one recruit with top 100 standing. And following the year you describe, again no top recruits. Was it the drinking, the blow up, or the loss of his coaching staff? No recruits=downhill!

This is about where I am at as well. I was concerned at his hiring that he was perfectly set for a MVC job but that he would struggle here. GM is a great guy, personable and does all the right things. He just isn't winning and that is a problem.

Wisconsin fans had the same concerns about Bo Ryan: how can we win in the Big 10 with this small college guy? The rest is history.
There is no question in my mind that Ryan's success at Wisky played a big part in Pollard's selection of GMac. Obviously, so far, GMac is no Bo Ryan.

He was also the best coach we've ever had.

In 5 years at ISU, Larry's Big 12 record was 42-38. And once he ran out of Tim Floyd's players he put up back-to-back conference records of 4-12 and 5-11. If that record is really from the "best coach we've ever had", then we're pretty sad.

Of course Larry's total record doesn't indicate that he's any better than his ISU record shows: In 18 years as a head coach, he's led his teams to the NCAA tournament a whopping three times.

If we want him back, I'm sure Southern Miss would be happy to let him go. Luckily, that's not going to happen.

McDoormat needs to call timeouts when teams go on 10 point runs against us... Maybe we should ask Tim Floyd who would be a good Coach for us since he got us Larry.

You don't seem to remember that was how LE tried to teach mental toughness? Not calling timeouts to see if the team could get it together on their own?

He is my favorite coach at ISU, regardless of sport.

He was also the best coach we've ever had.

LE's tenure began the downfall of Men's BBall at ISU. He was gift wrapped a team that was highly successful and couldn't do squat with the momentum moving forward out of the 00 and 01 teams.

He is an ok coach, but comes with many more negatives than positives.

best X's and O's coach we ever had. Too bad we didn't get to see his coaching with Morgan's recruiting. Damn Nattie Light.

I am down on basketball now, however I hope McD can get it turned around because he is a good guy.

and everyone knows most fans at iowa state would always take a good guy over a good coach.
