Batemon & Toure

I'm no offensive guru, but wouldn't a four-out offense be a good wrinkle for us? Put Batemon and Milan in corners and JJeff alone in the middle. I guess rebounding would be an issue with a lineup without a big, but I think it would really play to JJeff's passing and Milan/Batemon's shooting threat.

Not sure who decided to change Toure’s form on his jump shot but I’d argue he looked way cleaner and smoother in high school. Right now, he’s shooting straight set shots with no vertical lift. I think his form is correctable and as others have said, he clearly has the work ethic.

His form in high school was terrible. You don't want flailing legs. We've seen him shoot well with the set shot, but you can't aim the ball, which is what he's doing right now. You have to step into it with confidence. This is not a form issue. It's coordination and release.

His release is weird here to me, there's a hitch in it and he doesn't appear to be releasing it at the top of his jump. I'm no shooting coach though so what do I know.

We're all so focused on how bad Toure's shooting has become that we don't even talk about the fact that he has the highest turnover rate on the team other than Pleta. He's a massive liability on offense because he can't shoot, his defender can freelance, and when he does drive, it often ends with the other team with the ball.

I've been wanting JJ at the 5. I do like the 2 man game we've been running with JJ in the post and Milan giving the post entry. That puts a lot of pressure on the defense and keeps the perimeter defender from digging on Jefferson. I think we're at our best when the ball is moving inside out as opposed to side to side. I'm not a fan of the dribble handoffs with Buchanan and Pleta. It's an awkward offense for shooters who are used to shooting off of a pass, not a handoff.

There's nothing wrong with using a set shot. It's obvious that the coaching staff has worked with him to get rid of all the "noise" in his high school form, which is extremely inconsistent. And yes, flailing legs are a huge issue.

Watch the Purdue highlights. He is ready to shoot and has no hesitation. And the set shot goes in. It's the same shot he uses now, but his timing and coordination are way off because he has zero confidence in it.

I thought someone said Batemon graduated top of his HS class. Smart guy who is not done improving.

I believe he is continuing on his educational drive as well … Actuarial Science

We need both Toure and Bateman. It seems that Bateman is wired to be okay coming off the bench. Not sure about Toure.

Also, let’s not underestimate Toure’s defense. He made some big plays on Saturday on the defensive end.

Did notice we had him at the 5 some yesterday. Looks like about 10% of the time over the last 5 games. Not sure if there is stats available that show how lineups compare though?

Normally I’d agree, except we’ve struggled in the first 4 minutes of games recently. I’d like to see us get off to a better start.

I also think 16 minutes is too much for Toure at this point

It's really not that deep of a team and you have to have guys who can cover the ball.

I'd say he's also better on the handle than Batemon and ISU doesn't really have a strong back up PG type.

Did see Batemon take the ball up the court more yesterday when ASU was full court pressing. Which was nice to see. Did seem pretty comfortable with that at least.

Both have been amazing for us, and with our losses to graduation, they're both going to be central to the continuation of this program's amazing success.

Pointing out the fact that there are many things that have to go right for a set shot to succeed, and citing a one game sample size is kind of proving my point. I’d rather have his leg flail a little bit if it means he’s getting vertical lift on his shot. Easier to correct that than going set shot/flat footed.

Batemon has been playing more minutes than Toure since Utah and he has earned those minutes. We need both to play and both engaged for the current and the future. Having both gives TJ flexibility in the rotation. I expect both will have some great moments as we enter the postseason. I think we need to relax about Toure and let TJ help him through his current shooting slump.
