Barnett to start against Texas Tech

Yeah, I didn't like the few times I saw Jantz on the sidelines and how he looked like he just didn't care. Maybe Rhoads saw that too and that is why he named Barnett starter next week.

Problem was it wasn't just Jantz. I sat four rows behind the ISU bench today. Several times, Jantz, Darks, Hicks and Reynolds sitting by themselves with Darks laughing and yucking it up as the offense had just put the defense right back on the field.

Not sure about if Rhoads saw Jantz, or all of them or not, but it sure didn't look like a lot of chemistry on the offensive side of the ball.

Again, maybe someone had a real funny one liner or something, but sure didn't look good.

Agree, somewhat. He should have had a head set on, talking with JB after drives, giving advice, something! I am not ripping him by any means, but QB's are held to a higher standard. I remember AA do those things I mentioned when Tiller got PT last year.

AA= Definition of a leader

We had great seats today right behind the bench, and could not believe how much Jantz looked like he didn't give a **** after he got pulled. He was not even watching the game, he was joking around with SJ and just kind of generally looking like he didn't care. IMO he sucks, can't make routine throws and once again starts off a game with a pick. On another note why in the hell is Tiller allowed on the sideline he let everyone down by being ineligiblee, and he still gets to hang out on the sideline!? WTF!

i personally didn't think barnett looked very good out there. made at least 2 bad reads on the option, and he locked onto his wrs for a lot of his throws. he also wasn't quick in his decision making-looked like he wanted to tuck and run, then would stop and almost pass, then decide to run anyway. long ways to go.

This game should prove to people this team has more problems than just QB.

Receivers, notably Reynolds, stunk it up today.

Nice work. Reynolds, lenz, Gary and horne all dropped a pass. Are you saying Reynolds stinks extra bad because of the early pass where the defender hit his arms as the ball got there. If so, you seem to have an issue with him.

Cyclones should go with Barnett at QB - Big 12 Blog - ESPN

An 0-of-4 start with an interception meant an early hook for Steele Jantz in Iowa State's 33-17 loss to Texas A&M.

In his place, a freshman: Jared Barnett.

Barnett wasn't great, finishing 16-of-36 for 180 yards and no touchdowns. But a bigger number was the zero in the interception column.

He carried the ball 13 times for 66 yards, too.

Jantz has struggled with turnovers all season, throwing nine interceptions (the most in the Big 12) to just 10 touchdowns in six games.

Barnett didn't get much help from his receivers Saturday, who struggled with drops. His top target, Darius Reynolds, had just one catch for seven yards and dropped an easy pass down the middle of the field late in the first half that likely would have led to points.

Josh Lenz, though, stepped in with a career day, catching eight passes for 117 yards for his first 100-yard day.

Jantz has to progress as a passer, but it's clear Barnett isn't far behind. Jantz is battling a foot injury as well.

Barnett made plays and kept his team in the game. Not something you would expect from a freshman playing in his first meaningful game. Who knows how Barnett will grow if the Cyclones keep him at the helm and give him his first start next week.

Jantz is a junior, but the juco transfer is playing his first season of major-college football, too.

Iowa State doesn't have a ton of firepower offensively, and it can't afford to have possessions end in turnovers, even if Jantz's fourth-quarter heroics pushed the Cyclones to a 3-0 start.

Barnett didn't turn the ball over on Saturday, and until he does, he shouldn't have to turn the job over either.

Speaking of AA, it was nice to see a quarterback drive through a tackle today. I've been so used to AA carrying tacklers a few yards that the Jantz slide thing was surprising me.

barnett was lucky to have white there to recover a fumble, and also to have an A$M safety go for a kill shot on lenz instead of an easy pick or he could have easily had 2 to's as well. not knocking him on purpose, just pointing out he wasn't as great as some here seem to believe.
that said, i have no idea who i'd go with if i was coach. neither one gives me much confidence right now.

ESPN must not like Reynolds too.

Touchy group. Certain players are protected species while guys like Jantz can be ripped on without mercy.

That is true. He had 2 close calls. But it did seem that the fumble play there was miscommunication as Barnett looked for a quick screen pass but no one turned to catch and he was kinda left to try and make a play. Someone was on the wrong page.

espn just called reynolds barnetts top target in the article you quoted. not sure what your end game is. at least you're still consistently smug about your opinions.

fact-the whole team needs to get a lot better or we will be lucky to win against KU. not just jantz or reynolds.

Well then if the starters do not care and joke and laugh when they are getting their *** kicked then **** them and play someone who cares!!! Barnett played well today our recievers suck except for lentz. Darius does not deserve the nickname "money" play like it then dude!!! Jantz whatever dude go back to Cali if you do not want to at least talk to the other QB's on the team and not show emotion **** off.

Fair post. He definitely provided a spark...but it didn't last long. He seems a bit more accurate on throws yet doesn't possess the big play upside that Jantz does.

IMO...it starts up front. The pass protection is rather inconsistent, yet today looked better.

and jantz int should have been caught by lenz, yet people bag on his carelessness with the ball(isolated to i know, but using it as an example). both players had their own different circumstance in regards to to's today. jantz was unlucky, barnett was lucky

Ubbs likes Money. He has made points that he is easily their best offensive weapon so when he doesn't produce I think he can point that out. Just like when Blackman drops TD passes for OSU people bring it up.

Midseason review: Iowa State - Big 12 Blog - ESPN

Offensive MVP: Steele Jantz, QB. I nearly gave this to Reynolds, but I'll go with the early-season playmaker who is still learning to take care of the ball.

Midseason top 25 list: Honorable mention - Big 12 Blog - ESPN

Darius Reynolds, WR, Iowa State: Reynolds made a few huge catches in the Cyclones' early 3-0 start, including an eventual game-winner against UConn, and has 522 yards and 28 catches to rank fifth in the Big 12. He also has six touchdown catches.

I think we're going to be in a dogfight to finish 1-8 in the conference. That means a lot of young guys are going to need to get more and more snaps, and that means more for Barnett as well.

On the whole it doesn't matter too much since I think whoever is out there leading the unit, it's still the worst offense in the conference.

Never disputed he is the leading receiver on the team. He is not the most consistent/reliable. Huge upside...just does not always bring it. That's not smug, it's fact.

I didn't get to start watching till the 2nd quarter so I missed his INT, didn't know what the circumstances were.

The line blocked better today so that was nice to see. I just do not like to see players laughing it up when we are losing. Our offense is just terrible and it just has not changed lately. Is there any leadership on this team or not? Looks to me there is non and no chemistry between the offense and defense.

The separation our receivers got today seemed worse than any other game this season. That had been an improvement this year over the last few...but a step back today.

Wasn't much space to fit the ball in today. With A&M being such a poor pass defending team, that was a disappointment.

Reading these posts is a reason I typically wait 24 hours before posting anything. To make immature comments saying certain player suck and other slanderous comments is just stupid. Certain players play well and others play bad. This was a great A&M team and although I am not happy losing, I at least feel a hell of a lot better then I did after the Missouri game. These guys will come along and there is plenty left to cheer for. If we lay an egg and get our ***** kicked against Tech then ***** away!!!
