Agree that crossing the street is the issue. If they build the bridge, they also need to have a walking/biking path under both the east and west sides of the bridge that goes north to south. Then have a path that circles up from the north south paths to the pedestrian bridge. The north south paths might be underwater during floods but the vast majority of time the paths would be usable. If you have been to Sioux Falls, they have a great bike path that runs next to the Big Sioux River. Where the street has a bridge over the Big Sioux River, the bike path goes under the street but is slightly higher than the normal river level. It would be great for Ames to build a bike path like that along both the Skunk River and on Ioway Creek.
This is all because there's no sidewalk on the south side of S 4th.
I don't know why there is not a walkway there by now. They finally put a crosswalk in on the south side of that intersection too. It's not just FB traffic either that crosses, a lot of people park in that area for BB too especially when there is an event at CY Stephens duing a BB game that eats up a lot of the GA parking.
You wouldn't need to cross if there was a bridge on the other side though, right?
The pedestrians want to travel between the red and green x's. There is very little parking to the southeast of the bridge. Excellent point mentioned above that those that live in the apartments must cross 4th twice. The loop shown in yellow is an excellent option if there is room under the bridge. My option for a tunnel like under Center street leading to Hilton is shown in brown.
I've never been over that way, why do people want to travel between the green and red x's?
Every legal parking spot in shaded area is full on gameday. This is the route to get to them.

There is a sidewalk on the other side of the bridge in front of the Stadium View Apartments, unless you're arguing people needing to get to the north side of the road.

Thats fair. Our route out after games is usually down 4th, and even with that blinking crosswalk, people are still darting out in front of cars when it's dark out.
Maybe one of the new tenants in CyTown will be a jet pack rental business.
I understand that, but why do they want to get to the red x? Are people trying to get to the RV lots? If you're walking to the stadium wouldn't you just keep walking to University? Or if you're walking back from the stadium just go to University and South 4th intersection to cross?
My opinion is the majority of people traveling here use the ped bridge. I suppose it depends where you sit in the stadium.
I’ve thought many times that a bridge over Worrell between Vet med and student lot would be cool. That way you wouldn’t have the long walk down the driveway and street to get over there. Haven’t been to vet med since they stopped allowing rvs though so it’s not so much on my mind.
Yes, we park north of 4th to walk to RV lot. This helps some bridge congestion but doesn’t help get across the actual road.
Also a nice place to use relieve yourself on game day if you tailgate in the haunted forest. Always have trouble spelling my name on the concrete support when I do.
