Just east of University on S.E. 4th street is a bridge over Ioway Creek. The City of Ames is looking to build a pedestrian bridge on the south side to help with game day foot traffic. See the attached story.

That's a terrible and busy area for pedestrians, but the problem is crossing the street not the creek.

Seems to be an exploritory RFP to see if a per-fabricated basic pedestrian bridge (think corten steel arch) can be done for the money they seem to have budgeted for it).

This is all because there's no sidewalk on the south side of S 4th.

I will accept nothing less than imperial stack stone arches.

We come from this direction some game and there is quite a bit of foot traffic flowing down 4th. There is a sidewalk on the south side of the street all the way up to the bridge, but no sidewalk on that side of the bridge. The last point to cross to the north side of the street with a crosswalk is at Hazel Ave.

This bridge would keep people from potentially crossing 4th twice if they are on the south side and heading to the RV Lot or the RV lot bridge.

I don't get it! What happens when you get to the end of the yellow line? Now you have cross where there is no traffic control. Most people will want to cross here and not continue to Hazel where there is a crosswalk. I think an pedestrian underpass at S. 4th might work better.

I agree it's a bigger issue with nothing but what I call 'suggestion lights' for the pedestrians crossing north to south once you're east of the bridge, but the sidewalk narrows considerably across the bridge and there's nothing but a 15" dropoff between you and cars there. The outside traffic lanes frequently have walkers. Maybe there's a way to solve both issues.
