I'll admit that I was one that initially wasn't happy when I first heard about Hoiberg being hired. We had just gone through 7 out of 8 years of mediocre to outright **** basketball, and after four years of outright failure from McDermott, it looked as if JP was going after the PR hire and risking Hoiberg's legendary status in the process. And there were valid concerns that it was a PR move - rumors were there were a lot of established coaches that were interested in taking over ISU's program, and instead JP went after the hometown hero and perhaps the best basketball program ISU has ever produced but had absolutely no coaching experience whatsoever. The initial reaction was justified.
When everyone stopped and listened to what Hoiberg had to say at his press conference, it eased most everyone's fears. Okay, he had no coaching experience, but he had a plan that sounded reasonable enough, plus he brought in (what's his name) last year to mentor him and help him with the tough coaching decisions. While I wasn't 100% sold on the hire after the press conference, I was on board.
