8/10 weather

CRs news conference is held in the apparatus bay of the central fire station. Then they get another call about a transformer on fire. Very timely.

City manager claims that he has not been contacted by the White House about a visit but as noted the press corps is hearing about a stop here tomorrow.

Malicki is going for the throat and just brought up that FEMA contacted KCRG for info as they can't get in touch with anyone at the city.

Certain people rise to the occasion in events like this - and others are exposed as empty shells. Beth Malicki has been an absolutely star, she's been amazing. Brad Hart has been invisible - pointing fingers at the City Manager and then the Governor and doing... nothing? I can't tell.

not that it matters but Wikipedia has him as a Republican. Shocking CR elected one, right?

My wife's grandparents live over by the Marion pool. Wednesday night they got power for about 20 minutes before it went back out. This morning it came back on for an hour or so before going back out again.

So about that "Tuesday at the latest" information.

the Governor in her press conference on Friday said "Alliant promised that all power will be restored by the end of Tuesday".

Alliant said "a significant number of our customers without power will have power available by the end of Tuesday". That "available" word is doing a lot of work there - because to many people it may mean that others around them have power but it isn't hooked up to their house or the poles in their neighborhood.

This was like the City of Ames FB saying they would have 80% of the city with power by Tuesday night. It was more like only 20% had power by Tuesday night.

I haven’t seen much, a few articles and the local Chicago news had a segment on it this morning. I would imagine it gets more attention when Trump visits.

both the Washington post and New York Times had pretty big articles this weekend.

I will guarantee Alliant does not have power "available" to me by tomorrow night.

Neighbors have some company here doing the work on theirs with cranes and stuff. Asked them about a quote for a pine tree that has a hanger and we hate it anyway. Started at $1,800, came down to $1,300 and finally offered $800 after realizing they would need to trim it anyway to get equipment to the neighbors back yard.

15 minutes later it is down and I am not sure if I made a good choice or a dumb one.

Do you own a decent chainsaw and feel comfortable taking down a pine tree?

How tall was the pine? Just had two 70 footers taken down for $2800 total a few weeks ago.

Last night I saw a long line of utilities vehicles heading east between Iowa City and Davenport on I-80. If Cedar Rapids is still a disaster zone, it's a little surprising that they are leaving the area.

Some of them are overnighting in Davenport because all the closer hotels are booked. They may have just been done for the day
