8/10 weather

Dammit, now spent a bunch of time this morning reading about transfer switches. Need to get one put in this fall. Probably a 10 circuit 30 amp.

Get a auto transfer with a natural gas generator and you will be the favorite neighbor around. The last winter when a storm knocked power out at the farm. I have several calls about getting water and other things when they drive by a livestock facility of mine and I was the only place with yard lights on. Power was off for 30 seconds, 45k generator with auto transfer allowed me to sleep well.

I think this is what my parents have. I'm pretty sure it is a very expensive option, right?

18 years ago it cost me between 16-20k for all of it. Ambulance shed did one 7 years ago and we spent around 8-10k. Not as big though.

Damn, 45K! JFC, you powering a mansion with a factory of sweat shop laborers in your garage? That's like 2X to 3X what most peeps would need to power their house even with A/C. I could power essentials, short of the electric double stove and central a/c, on 7000.

Still no power in eastern Marion. I've heard we'll get it back on Tuesday by midnight at the latest. We're running a generator, as are most of my neighbors. Gas lines are manageable and lines at fast food places are long.

We shipped our young kids to my parents during a lot of this blackout, which is helping us survive.

Still running without power or internet. Currently at a friend’s house in NE CR taking a break. Have been running chainsaw and patching roofs the last 5 days. I’m lucky that I have Forest Industry and USFS training with chainsaws and trees. Going to get power back by Tuesday. They are currently replacing the snapped power poles one block over from my house.

Gone through quite a few chains already? Nothing better than a fresh chain.

Yup. Been teaching folks about how to use wedges, axes, etc. when dealing with problem trees.

Had both chainsaws broke once, had to take the tree down with an axe. Wasn’t very sharp either. Thankfully it was a small tree. My triceps were sore for a couple days.

Both my wife and I were stuck outside during the storm. If I had WiFi and not mobile data I'd upload the video I took of the tree ripping out and smashing my neighbor's house. She was in her car at a gas station and I was in the alcove of my neighbor's house. Good times.

How were you stuck outside?!

Same here. Where my wife and I live, they're saying it'll be Tuesday when we get power. Friend of ours who lives out in the country told us she likely wouldn't have power until early September..

Finally got power back on, but our neighbor is still without. I would like to say thanks to all the volunteers that Story county sent our way. We had people from all over the county around our small town on Saturday. Out of all the areas I've seen, we were by far hit the hardest in the county, but as such a small town we aren't near the scale of most places.
