There are probably also some athletes who decide that their best bet to get on a team is to go an alternate route.
This is almost always it. Sure there are some situations that are different, but generally I think many just see an easier path going elsewhere. Its the easy way out IMO for those athletes in a lot of cases, even if they end up reaching the pinnacle of their sport.

I appreciate you sharing this. I was sure I remembered the Korbut/Comaneci days when the gymnasts would bend their bodies around the lower bar on the uneven bars. They don’t do that anymore, they’re spaced differently so you can’t. I was starting to think my memory was faulty, but this proves I was right.
