I love the sports click journalism that happens these days. I saw this headline and clicked it. I'll provide link if your interested but it's the biggest nothing burger I've ever seen.

If what this guy is complaining about gets to you I feel sorry for you.

I agree with the writer. No need to feel sorry for me. I just like to see sportsmanship. I know we will never see that or amateur sports in college ever again. I'm 54 going on grumpy old man I guess.

The whole thing pretty bizarre

To me it's pretty straight forward:

1. Romania coaches ****** up by not appealing the Romanians score - she got deduction for going out of bounds but she never went out of bounds.

2. If the USA coaches appealed in the required time Chiles keeps the medal. If the USA coaches didn't appeal in the required time then the score change is null and Chiles finishes 5th.

Now if I am Chiles they'd have to hire an assassin to get the medal from me, no way I'd voluntarily give it up.

At this point even if the new evidence proves they appealed in time; there is no chance the IOC and FIG overturn a bronze medal a third time

They didn’t score the routine as presented. The difficulty score was wrong. So, they judged it accordingly, but the base score was incorrect. That, in and of itself, is bizarre. Very rare for that to happen.

Add to that, the time given to initiate an inquiry is usually 3 minutes, but because Chiles was last, they only have 1 minute. Officials say they submitted the appeal in one minute and 4 seconds. US Gymnastics apparently has video proving the inquiry was submitted in 47 seconds.

I wouldn’t give the damn thing back either, and if I was the Romanian, I wouldn’t know what to think. She had the bronze, it was taken away from her right away, she was then given hope that she would get it back, but now who knows.

If they changed the routine to add difficulty at the last minute I could see that getting overlooked which is why there is the appeal process.

I am curious why USA Gymnastics didn't provide this video evidence of the time when this was appealed a couple days ago.

I can’t find it now, but earlier today I saw a tweet from an American who, in an earlier Olympics, had taken the silver with a Russian gymnast winning gold. When the officials determined the Russian had cheated (maybe doping, maybe something else, I don’t know) they revoked her gold medal to award it to the American.

When they contacted the Russian gymnast to request that she send the gold medal back, she replied that “she couldn’t find it.” The American was given a cheap medallion instead.

Maybe Jordan Chiles is just careless with her stuff and loses things, I don’t know, it could happen. ;)

Says right in the letter they didn't have the video immediately

Just say it fell in the Seine. It was safe to compete in so the officials should be happy to take a swim and find it.

Well the runner started things with his remarks. Don't talk crap if you take what comes from it. The comment didn't even personally attack him. It went after what runner said about basketball team.

A good chunk of every foreign team was made up of NBA players. NBA is very much worthy of calling their champion a "world champion"

Is the NBA winner almost certainly better than any non-NBA team? Sure. But it’s still silly to call themselves the World Champions when they don’t compete against teams from other countries.

On the list of things that upset/annoy me this is very low, but Lyles was right here.

If the SEC decided to stop playing non-SEC teams and just anointed their champion as “national champion” they would probably be correct most of the time. But it would still be absolutely ridiculous for them to call themselves national champions.

I hear you, but I do think one minor difference is that the NBA is the league where all the best players in the world play. There is no other basketball league like it which is where they got World Champs. not saying its right or wrong.

I really don't see why the NBA gets so much hate for this when in MLB, they actually named the final series the "World Series" and then the World champs.

I think people in other countries are used to Soccer, where there are like 20 world leagues, and the top 5 are really competitive, even though everyone knows the Premier League is the world's best league.

I think what you have here is a spoiled cocky brat sprinter that knows nobody watches him except for every four years and is trying to generate clicks. If I were the USA team, I wouldn't even go there. Lyles needs to remember that he is in a non-revenue sport that is never on my TV guide, and he weighs 5-10 150 pounds. AKA...know your role in the food chain. just my 2cents.

Sure, the best players play in the NBA, but that doesn't make them world champions when they don't play other teams. Similar to my hypothetical with the SEC or if the winner of the UEFA champions league called themselves world champions.

And do they get more hate? I feel like I see this argument just as much with MLB.

And yes Lyles is cocky and spoken, but he was right here. He clearly got under the NBA's skin (which is really funny in my opinion), but I think his point was a good one.

If you're able to ignore the 'legacy' noise, it is still fun to watch LeBron when he decides to impose his will. His MVP days are done in the NBA, but in short stretches he is still the most dominant player on Earth. It's pretty clear this was his team, and it was nice to be able to just appreciate his greatness while he's still able to. Not sure how much longer he'll want to do it.
This, right here. So much hate for no real basketball reason at all. You can criticize some things he does on the court antics wise sometimes, but who can’t you do that to? The man has been playing at a 25/7/7+ line his entire career. That is insane. Never in trouble, high school sweethearts, good father, elevates his friends, etc.

At damn near 40 he still can’t be stopped when he wants to get it. 22 years in the NBA and isn’t just out there, but still a beast. The body will breakdown sooner than later, but if he can stay healthy, I can see another 2-3 of pretty high play out of him. Absolutely bonkers. Enjoy it while it lasts because this is beyond rare to see.

But why is it a point even worth making? Every single major sporting league calls their champion "champions of the world". It was nothing more than a manufactured reason to drum up attention and get his name in the spot light. The sentiment of the statement itself is fine/correct, but the reasoning behind is even being a discussion is what's stupid.

Somewhat similar to the other made up controversy around him being "fastest man in the world" despite there being 11 men who have run faster 100m times and that he doesn't have fastest time run this year.

It was manufactured BS. Sure they aren’t world champs, but who was actually complaining until he said something?

Also, check twitter comments to the US winning gold. Lots of back and forth claiming we still aren’t world champs, that’s Germany because the won the FIBA WORLD championship. Even though the Olympics is what countries want, blah blah blah, it’s just weird how some hate us for claiming we are the champs, which rightfully we have been for 20 straight years now…..

Remember when Flava Flav had a chicken joint in Clinton?

And I never imagined the day when Snoop Dog would become some kind of official Olympic mascot.
The Snoop thing was fine but it didnt make a lot of sense. He's an entertaining guy, but it was just to raise his profile for him being a judge on the Voice.
