2019 Personal Goals

I tested out today, was curious to match today to a month ago.

Stats are:
Bench - 190 (+9)
Squats - 206 (same, ate a ton before exercising this day so might retest Monday)
Deadlift - 265 (+15)

I had to miss a week because of the other grandparent had a funeral (my luck). Hopefully no more distractions so I can get these up.

Looks like you passed me but you had more lifting experience than me. At 661. I'll probably just update this post from now on instead of bumping this every month.

Progress is progress. Now to win a ping pong doubles tournament!

Nice bump - was thinking about doing this last week!

We didn't get a savings account opened specifically for baby, but did move money into a CD and high-interest savings that I think we'll convert to the baby's so that counts in my book.

Speaking of books, I'm mostly through one book. I have 4 weeks left of my workout program- which included a 530am session this week to try and be more of a morning person, got a great mid-year review.....what else, meal planned into May and spent the day out at an event with dh and baby so that's quality time. Feel like it's going well so far!

At age 70, I want to shoot bogey golf on a regular basis. I started working out just before Christmas to improve my flexibility and stamina. Us old hooters that play Homewood in the early morning always walk. Social security will not pay for carts and walking keeps our cardiologists a little happier. HINT: Cardiologists are never happy.

2018 goal was to read 20 books, only read 12. Kept the same goal for 2019. Three down, 17 to go.

Anyone else try the macronutrient diet? You get a calorie count and a ratio of protein, fat, and carbs that your calories will come from based on your age, weight, and activity level, I'm just starting it, but it seems like my allocations are high. Right now its recommended I get 2300 calories with 200 grams of carbs. Grant it, I'm at my heaviest at 225 and I reported a moderate activity level since I'm training for the market to market. I'm not sure I was hitting 200 g of carbs when I put on all the weight.

That calorie level might be a touch a high but the carb number is in line with the calories.

High time for an update/check-in since we're now 2/3 through the year! How is everyone doing?

Holy **** I made a long list......

  • Quality time with spouse.....had a couple dates away from baby, finally have a real babysitter and going out to dinner next two Saturdays!
  • Quality time with baby - putting phone away and reading books, playing with him, enjoying this stage before he too quickly grows up. Be better about being present, enjoying this time and not having so much guilt. Already started on this by moving all his books out of his closet and next to our well-loved rocking chair. Found we weren't reading them when we had to go to the closet. doing ok with this - he loves reading books and now throws them at us to read to him. Not great when you were lying down and didn't expect the hardcover copy of Brown Bear, Brown Bear to drop on your head
  • Time with friends - did not want to be that person who dropped off the face of the earth after a baby. Need to make an effort here.
    • Invite friends for 1x month board game night
    • For real, work on finding a babysitter so you can leave house at night - would allow for date nights too we have one!!! Going to dinner with friends next weekend. Have hung out with friends like 4x in the past month, really good progress here
  • Fitness
    • Finish post partum exercise program - probably go back and repeat weeks at lower frequency once done in a couple months done and still going at 3x a week
    • Maintain current weight/decrease measurements done but not focusing on numbers anymore, just feeling good and getting regular exercise
    • Gym class 1x week going well
    • Run race in April - put baby in stroller for runs once it gets nicer! lol no
  • Time/household management - feel so short on time all the time when we're home. And it results in less quality time with DH and baby. So doing things like meal planning, maybe making a chore chart to keep up on cleaning a bit better, and using our marker board to note tasks/appts so we don't get surprised by them and can plan ahead better
    • Use my planner this year! DH got me one for Xmas but I always stop using it much by like Feb. I need to use it this whole year because there's too much to just expect my brain to remember and I'm dropping some balls. need to use more
    • Utilize marker board as chore chart/reminder nope
    • Look into pricing for house cleaner or robotic vacuum and seriously discuss still in progress
    • Meal plan dinners all year still doing this
    • Put recipes on cards so you stop having to scour the internet every time done, really helps
    • Probably it's own goal - but become more of a morning person. Baby does that by default but going to bed earlier would make this easier. And can get stuff done so I don't feel so pressured to work on things in the evening. Would like to do exercise in the morning but that's just too much right now with unpredictable night wakeups Had a good run of Friday morning workouts but stopped in like June. Still not a morning person
  • More yard work
    • Get section behind house leveled......maybe put in plants? no, possibly next year though...patio will need some work we've discovered.
    • Plan out annual beds done, not doing so hot because I never water them when I should. Note for next year, get containers that hold water longer or do fewer annuals.
    • Put in garden again,.....no muskmelon this year! yes and froze several bags of peppers and tomatoes so far
  • Financial -
    • Max roth IRA's set up to do so
    • Start savings & education funds for little man. done
    • Have 1.25x salary in retirement? Need to check current numbers to know how reasonable that is. After the stock market's last month, it may not be  think this is going well
  • Work
    • Get excellent reviews and hit the big goals you are targeting for year end mostly done
    • Work on meeting management skills, lol
    • Make decision on work/life balance and potentially drop down half day a week. stayed full time
  • Vacation............tbd - where, with or without baby? possibly with baby later this month
  • Read 10 high quality books. Recommendations welcome. This is low priority but I'd like to read some good books this year Just finished #5 with two more in progress
  • Finish Christmas cross stitch for baby. This is a real stretch, lol. But we'll try. not happening because a niece was announced and working on that instead
  • Insulate garage??? not happening, garage gets shorted again

I don't believe in resolutions, but I thought a discussion of 2019 goals for everyone might be a worthwhile thread.

For me, I only have 2 this year:

1) Personal Health - eliminate pop from my diet altogether. I also have a goal to complete the Farrell's 10 week program.

2) Financial Health - Wife and I have gotten lax in our budget and spending habits. I've started using YNAB and have a goal to continue that on a weekly basis. Further, our goal is to cut back extra trips to Hy-Vee outside of our weekly grocery run.

What is everyone else working on in 2019?

Thanks for resurrecting @cowgirl836 !!!

I'm doing very well in one, but not as great in another.

1) Personal health - I'm kicking ass here. I joined Farrell's back in April. I'm down 35 lbs and have quite literally cut my body fat percentage in half (26% down to 13%). I'm in the best shape of my life thanks to that program. The 10 weeks ended in June and I've continued to progress in my fitness. I'm very pleased with my results on this goal.

2) Financial health - I'm still struggling here. I'm using YNAB, but really got lax in discipline. Plus, all this healthy eating I've been doing is really bloated our food budget (protein shakes/bars are pricey, as is cooking everything fresh). We paid off my wife's car back in February, so that was a nice win. We did a lot of traveling this summer, had some car repairs, and are doing a house project. As a result, we have dug into our savings account more than I would like. Though I did just realize I forgot to update my W4 when my son was born, so we should have a larger than usual tax return coming next year.

this aged terribly...

1. Buy a house. Our lease is up in July and ideally we'd like to be moving at the beginning of June. Renting has its perks but we're ready to have a place to call our own and we finally have enough saved up for a PMI-less down payment and closing costs.

2. Lose 12 pounds. If I do it, I'd be down 23 total since the beginning of 2018. I was down 17 at one point during the year but then a week-long all-inclusive in Mexico happened and I never fully recovered from the damage.

3. Adopt a pet (after moving into aforementioned new house).
1. Done. Bought in April, renovated a couple months, moved in June.

2. Down 8 pounds currently. Was down 11 at one point, but a staycation in August + Labor Day weekend were bad on the ol' diet.

3. Not yet. Facing unexpected push-back from the wife. :(

Give me the tool on asking about #2?????? I think somebody may be expecting a present.

the poop-covered hand I got from him blowing out a diaper in his high chair is "present" enough for me right now thank you very much
