2016 Rio Summer Olympics

see that Lochte might be lying?

I watched that interview with NBC and it was super odd. His reason for not reporting it, how he talked about having a gun to his head....Not terribly surprised that it might be false. Probably hanging out with some ladies of the night or something.

Lochte is back in the US, two of his buds were pulled OFF their flight, and the fourth guy (the one who also has a warrant out like Lochte) didn't show up for his flight. They're about to air an interview with Lochte. If these guys lied, their swimming careers are pretty much over. It's unlikely they would ever represent the US again.

I could see the Lochte thing starting as him texting a buddy (Phelps?) that he was robbed as a joke while he was out partying. By the time he woke up the next morning the "news" of the mugging was all over the place so it was pretty much too late to take it back. At that point he decided to just go with it probably thinking it would go away in a day or two. Little did he know, some countries get pissed when you spread rumors that make them look bad. He's lucky he got out of there when he did. Sounds like the other swimmers with him might be stuck in Brazil.

it actually hit the media through his mom. I have my money on he and his buddies engaging in some unsavory (to American eyes) activities and telling a fib to cover for whichever buddy's girlfriend/relative/you get the idea thinking that yeah, it wouldn't go anywhere or get any press. And then it did and they had to go with it. Now it's becoming a nice little problem for the buddies stuck there.

I'm not sure what to think about the Lochte thing. I wouldn't want to stick around if I lied about something like that, but I also wouldn't want to stick around had the police robbed me with the help of a taxi driver. Rio is not a safe place. ESPN had an article about a jujitsu guy who got kidnapped by "police" who then extorted money from him before releasing him. It's crazy down there.

Does Brazil's response seem excessive to anyone else?

I think it appears excessive to the public just because of the timing of it. If this had happened last week when the swimmers were still gonna be in Brazil for a while it would not have been that big of a deal, but because some of them were pulled from their flight then it looks as being excessive.

From what I have read there is definitely enough in their stories to generate some doubt. The police have not been able to find any witness or the supposed cab that they took due to lack of details by the athletes. So if they lied they have wasted public resources by making the police investigate a fake robbery, and if they were to leave the country it would be very hard to get to the bottom of it or to punish/fine them.

Edit: Here is what makes me personally suspicious: The fact that the robbers didn't take their cellphones. I lived in Brazil until I was 18, and the one thing I know is that when you are being robbed they always take your phone.

Yeah, except why make a big deal of it now? Between all the other crazy stuff going on, it just seems a waste of time at this point. Why pull people off planes and confiscate passports? No one got hurt and nothing heinous happened regardless of whether they were telling the truth or not. It's not like this single incident is significant in comparison to the dozen+ other criminal/crazy things that have gone on down there during these games. Why spend resources on this?

Because there were only 1450 muggings that night not 1451. They want accurate crime stats!!!!

Thank goodness for online streaming. Gold medal women's beach volleyball was to be in primetime but since US didn't make it, it's now airing during late night. So okay they show bronze in primetime but go to with one set already done.

Because you do not pick and choose which crimes to investigate or not.
