2015 Defensive Depth Chart - We will be better, much better.

I do think this years juco d tackles are better than last year, but I also thought Harris would be a sure starter at this time last year.

Biggest concern is LB. Wally's system flows everything to LB and puts a ton of responsibility/pressure on them . If LBs are good, then defense will probably be average. If they are bad, well... The LBs listed are unproven, at best.

Miller was a huge concern coming into 2014, and he did figure it out for a couple games and the defense was competent. Once he got hurt, defense became bad, and then gave up in the later games.

Look, I have some hope about 2015. The defense almost can't get worse. If the d-line jucos play, and the young d-line guys improve, then that could be a solid group, even for the Big12. I think the secondary is really good, I am very high on Tribune and Cotton-Moya. It's all about the linebackers.

I will be more shocked if Tucker and Leath do not end up starting. Both are highly rated Juco's. Tucker was rated the #5 Juco DT and Leath was rated #6 Juco DT. Who do you think starts instead?

Yeah, and I've seen many highly rated JC players do nothing for us over the year. I think one of the half dozen or so returning DTs starts over Leith (Ayeni, Trent, Garcia, Cousins, Aka - potentially Myers though I think he goes back to DE). In all my years watching ISU FB, its common for fans to project them as starters but its very rare to go 2 for 2 with JCs and have both of them start right away... if you recall last year everyone had Devron Moore and Floyd penciled in as starters at safeties.

You get Harris back who had no idea what a scheme was when he came in. Playing football wasn't his issue. His issue was having a scheme to play within. Then you have a bunch of really young guys who shouldn't have had to play. It was still on the coaches that they had to play but in a guys second or third year, they shouldn't be forced into the action they were.
Yeah, I hope Harris is awesome, but the fact that he was behind Meeks and Seeley in fall camp last year worries me. Unfortunately those young LBs didn't show very much last year, hopefully they will all have great offseasons and improve a lot.

Demond Tucker just guaranteed a big 12 championship next year for iowa state football.

Dead ******* serious.

Sounds like you know ALL the details of Cousin's incident. IMO, it is best to see what transpires before making rash judgements. The charge I saw cited was Simple Domestic Assault. There is a real possibility the charge could even be dropped.

Never said I know everything. What I do know is there should be no tolerance for domestic violence period. If he was falsely accused and charges are dropped then let him back on. Otherwise, I have no problem suspending him for a good amount or completely. There is no excuse for that crap.

hey, remember when you thought this years defense had some surprising strengths?

Oh man thank you for finding that thread Clark! Pure gold! Doesn't surprise me one bit that we're now hearing eerily similar comments by the same few individuals... Mesa (who tried telling me in that thread that my logic fails - yikes), Stormin, and good ol' DuckDynasty. Go ahead and read that thread again guys.

A lot of the time the issue with ISU is not the starters, but the backups. With just a little bit of luck there will be multiple guys that are at least serviceable at DL and DE next year. That would be a huge improvement over last year. Basically the starters are playing way too many downs, get hurt, and then the backups are playing way too many snaps and they have no one to back them up. I don't think you can predict who will start on the defense, and I am fine with that. What really needs to happen is the ability to get guys some rest during the games without having to throw a freshman out there and hope it works out.

This from the guy that said Ruddock was a better QB than Sam. LOL!
And I'm even more convinced you attended Iowa (even they wouldn't be so stupid to provide you a degree) because your reading skills suck too.
This is what I said
"If we can get a Juco NG soon, I will feel a lot better. Could rotate the Juco with Cousin at the Nose and possibly move Trent as a dual backup DT with Aka. If Cousin goes down, we are toast. If we get another true NG, that isn't a dropoff from Cousin, or possibly better, we should be ok. I agree, our DE's will be the best unit as a whole in the CPR era."
We never got another Juco NG and Cousin got hurt...and we were toast. Anything else I said was under the premise that we remained healthy. We didn't. And you are still a ******* Iowa fan. 20-17, merry fricken Christmas.

Simple domestic assault. Simple misdemeanor. Look up the definition.

Been busy reading your posts of how the Hawkeye Linebackers would be great. And that the Hawkeyes would have a great season. Did your predictions include the Hawkeyes' loss at home to Iowa State?

A few comments about the OP.

1. Sounds to me like Qujuan Floyd will be switching to Nickel in the off-season. I wonder what happened to him. I thought he looked really good in the Iowa game, then rarely saw him on the field after that. I hope they move him to Nickel. No use wasting him as a backup safety when he's showed flashes of play-making ability.

2. I am very excited about the young linebackers. I think Northrup, Seonbuchner, and Harvey were all good gets. I know Seonbuchner will be slowed by his knee injury, but i am excited to see what he can do. I also agree, Mills/Harris/Northrup (though i think Floyd starts Nickel) is an athlete upgrade from last year. Rhoads said recently that Knott would stay inside though, remember he's only going to be a RS-Jr. Plenty of time for improvement for him, Meeks, and Seeley. Guys like Jeremiah George and Jevohn Miller show that immense improvements can be made.

3. You're forgetting a few young guys on the inside that played and should improve. While i agree that i like what i saw from Garcia at times and Ayeni being back should help, Pierre Aka and Vernell Trent are a few guys who are still a little green that should develop some in the offseason too.

How is the view from up there on your horse?

It's not so funny when you comment on this...

I love these guys that predict doom and gloom every year...a number of whom are thinly veiled Iowa fans who simply come here to backhandedly slam our Cyclones...and then crow about how right they are. Our program has ALWAYS struggled to compete, so it hardly shows insight on your part when you cry that the sky is falling every pre-season.

Yes, I was wrong on our linebacking corps last year...or better yet, a year ahead on their development. I underestimated just how much our LB play would be degaded by atrocious DL play. Guilty. Harris, Mills and Northrup will be a FAR better trio than many here are willing to acknowledge...and I will gladly make the assertion that they will round into a very solid group in 2015 if they avoid injury. So have at it again next year, boys, if I'm wrong. In the meantime enjoy wallowing in your defeatism!
