2015 Defensive Depth Chart - We will be better, much better.

I mean I wouldn't be shocked if we won 8. A lot of returning experience. Consecutive years in systems/with coaches. Favorable schedule compared to other years.

Get the injury problem of the last two years figured out and who knows what could happen.

And I'm not saying I expect eight wins either before I get jumped on for that. But I do fully expect at least 6.

That's the thing though. You're already talking about winning 6 or 7 games and making a bowl next year, and it's still December. By August, you'll be believing we can win 8 or 9 games, just like a lot of other people.

I think we all need to realize that if we double our wins from this year, we'll win 4 games next year. That's if we DOUBLE our win total from this year. Tripling our win total from this year, and getting 6 wins, is most likely not going to happen, and it's better if we all realize that right now.

Our defense this year was possibly the worst I've seen at Iowa State, and that is saying a TON. I sat through some really horrible years back in the day where we had absolutely no talent whatsoever on the field, but at least guys were generally in the right position on the field. Our talent wasn't horrible this year, but guys were never in the right spot, which is kinda scary. Made me really question Wally big time.

I know this won't make anyone happy, but winning 4 or 5 games is probably the best we'll see next year.

Actually, I thought Danny Mac's D in his first three years, and JW's D in his final two years were the same, or worse; they simply didn't face the offensive schemes CPR and co. are facing currently. I remember particularly McCarney's early teams couldn't stop the run unless he committed at least nine players to stopping it which made them exceptionally vulnerable to the long bomb. Anyway that's how I remember things.

I think it's loony to project win totals less than a month removed from the previous season. At least wait until after the spring practices and scrimmages. Too many unknowns right now - we don't know if the entire coaching staff will be back, we don't know who (if anyone) is leaving the program by transfer or dismissal, and we don't know how the juco additions are going to mesh with the team. Right now we can be reasonably confident that the defense will be better in 2015 if only by default. That's about it. Time will tell with all the other stuff.

That is NOT what I said. I said I am hoping to win 6 or 7 games in a best case scenario. And what is wrong with being optimistic? Pessimism is a cancer. Negativity breeds negativity. Accentuate the positive. Eliminate the negative. Continued negativity affects morale, confidence, and motivation.

Our defense was not very good. But not the worst ever. The caliber of competition we played was very good. I saw my first Iowa State football games when Johnny Major was coach 45 years ago. I have seen worse defenses over the years.

Not sure what time period you are talking "back in the day". But the defenses we had around 1997 under McCarney were pretty bad. And that was back in the day when the offenses were not so prolific.

Agree that the defense did not perform well and the team was pretty battered and beaten physically and emotionally at the end of the season. Injuries, youth and schedule took their toll.

No one knows how we will do next year. And yes, there is the possibility we could only win 4 or 5 games next year. As well as the possibility of 6 or 7 games won.

Wow, you're setting yourself up for a big let down.

Don't get me wrong, I hope you're right, but when was the last time we won 8 games? Over a decade ago I believe.

McCarney's 1997 team gave up almost 45 points per game. And that was in the days when offenses were run oriented and did not run No Huddle wide open offenses. We were really bad.

You would know about let downs. You are constantly setting everything up for the worst possible scenario and yet you are still whining all the time.
