DEPTH CHART IS OUT!

I just blame our LB. We had the same scheme we've always had, and we've always been a pretty good rush defense. When you're down to 3rd-4th string guys, I don't care what the scheme is, your run defense is going to suck.
well I think there was also some coaches figuring out the scheme, our tendancies and what we like to do. It happens. The 3-3-5 served us well and was the defense that was the antidote to the spread heavy Big 12. I'm sure we will still run it, but I bet Heacock will have something ready to use with the player packages we have to keep offenses off balance.

I don't agree. We've been doing it for 10 years. It's not a coincidence everyone "figured it out" at the exact same time we lost 8-9 LBs and some starting safeties to injury.

Would you trade two 1000 yard receivers for four 500 yard receivers?
Probably not. But id prefer to spread the ball around more between 4 WR’s, a few TE’s and RB’s for more yards than the two. Two 1,000 yard Wr’s is pretty rare, and great to have.

I doubt we're changing our D alignment from the 3-3-5 this year or anytime soon. As was said above, LB injuries resulted in our run defense drop-off. And then our safeties got banged up trying to cover for the inexperience at LB. By the XII Champ Game, our back 7 was basically a walking MASH unit.

It's not really all about the alignment, it's player execution whether it's a 4-3, 3-4 or 3-3-5. Our defensive stats continue to be at or near the top of the league and highly ranked nationally as well.

Well, unless I heard it wrong, Heacock seems to admit that schematically teams figured some things out, that combined with injuries. 3:20 mark

I don’t think you understand how rare it is for ISU to have 1 1,000 yard receiver let alone 2. If we have 3-4 guys all get around 500-700 that’s a really good group of receivers.
There were only 29 1,000 yard receivers last year and us and Ohio State are the only teams that had two of them.

The following teams didn't have a 1,000 yard receiver last season:
#2 Notre Dame
#3 Oregon
#4 Penn St
#6 Georgia
#8 Boise St
#9 Tennessee
#10 Indiana
#12 SMU
#13 BYU
#14 Clemson
#16 Illinois
#17 Alabama
#19 South Carolina
#21 Army
#22 Missouri
#24 Memphis
Penn State had a 1,000 yard receiver, he just happened to be a TE.

You did indeed hear it wrong.

He was talking about tendencies within the scheme, not problems with the scheme itself.

It’s a chess match.

And what he’s not saying—because he’s a perfectionist—is that the injuries left him playing with one metaphorical hand tied behind his back.

Those are the exact same thing.
They can be, but not necessarily the sole purpose of action.

It’s all a means to an end….and I can assure you, when they are calling plays during a game, or putting Cooper in at CB, it’s not to increase draft stock.

My biggest surprise was no OR between Hansen and Sama. Looks like Hansen is the clear-cut 1
Hansen gets up the field and churns out more tough yards. Abu looks to have toughness but gets caught trying to make too many extra moves at times. If he turns it upfield more he will get more snaps.

here is my original qoute that was challenged. "well I think there was also some coaches figuring out the scheme, our tendancies and what we like to do. It happens. It seems we are saying the same thing?

I say scheme shmeem. Our linebackers were hurt.

I think that is simplifying it some. In the bowl game, we had Ebel, McLaughlin and Lovett. Not to mention Goodwin, Barnes and Sadowsky. Yet Miami ran all over us.

Realistically, people have figured out the scheme some. Injuries at LB didn’t help. Injuries at Safety didn’t help. It also didn’t help that Williams and Cooper were poor tacklers. A lot of things went wrong…some scheme, more personnel.

Not for me. Sama was a walking 2 yard gain last year. Way too many runs of less than 4 yards.

Carson Hanson will fall forward for positive yards EVERY time. And he's absolutely nails in the red zone. The offense moves way better with him on the field.
