The bird id app i installed saiid a summer tanager. The bird was there early spring so not when the internet says the scarlette tanager molts. The tan spot on the back of the head made my parents think it wasn't a tanager
Like someone else said, location would help. I went with Scarlet Tanager assuming you are in Iowa. That would be the more common bird in that case. Here's another pic of a molting scarlet tanager that's looks quite a bit like yours.

Upgraded camera lens a bit. Been resisting a big camera upgrade and told myself this was enough until I am sure this isn't just a short term hobby (I tend to have many short hobbies).

I braved the heat to take a few shots. At the end I felt just like the squirrel in that last picture.

Orchard Oriole was at Eddyville Sand Prairie. Cool spot for those that haven't been there.

I saw my first Eastern bluebird last weekend near Strawberry Point. Bigger than I thought and prettier than I thought. He was showing off for us.

All pics good. Squirrel pic made me laugh. My favorite of the set.

Cecropia moth, I'd say. It's not a bird :) We loved these as kids and I remember watching one "hatch" in a glass jar on our back porch. We also tried to raise the tiny larvae from eggs a female laid, but that didn't work.
I guess I needed the jimlad

I got it - and appreciated it.

By the way, about a week ago I was walking by my garage door - which is white and has a white wood frame around the opening. I saw what I thought was bird poop on the frame. Upon closer inspection it was actually a moth. And wouldn't you know it, it is often called the Tufted Bird-dropping Moth... I guess it is a fitting name.

My image:

It hung around in the same vicinity (around my garage doors) for the better part of a week.

We took a very quick trip up north on Saturday. While there we saw a family of loons, both parents and their two chicks which were about a week old. They came right up by the dock so we could see their new family members. I didn't have my phone with me, but my daughter captured a few shots. Here's one:

This is on the Gull Lake chain near Nisswa, MN.

Been raining pretty steady for hours, periodically heavy rain, and now a cardinal is in my crab apple singing up a storm. Going full on Fred Astaire Gene Kelly.

Orioles not eating jelly. Probably too hot and they are looking for places in the deep woods to cool off.

If they have young they are hunting and feeding them protein. Lots of little green caterpillars are the food du jour
Yes, I have been told that you should do jelly in the spring and fall but meal worms in the summer. I have changed over to the meal worms after learning this but haven't gotten the orioles back yet.
