Bird Migration and Misc Birding Thread

Desert owls from April trip to Arizona. Two Great Horned Owl owlets in a rock cavity nest eroded into a sandstone butte. Pretty cool sight for a Midwest boy not used to seeing this sort of thing.

FYI, this was with a 600mm lens and cropped some so I was quite a ways back from the owls and not disturbing them. Plus, they seemed pretty used to people, this was shot from a trail/path.

Yes, I have been told that you should do jelly in the spring and fall but meal worms in the summer. I have changed over to the meal worms after learning this but haven't gotten the orioles back yet.

My mom never gets them back after it gets hot in the summer. She had at least 12 pairs of Baltimore and 2 orchards. They left the week of Fathers Day. There were a few stragglers but I’m sure they were gone last week.

I put up a feeder with meal worms and have yet to have one eaten (or maybe one but nothing seen at the feeder and never a noticeable number missing)

Oddly same thing with my Nyjer seed feeder dispute a ton of finches in my yard

Does "old" thistle seed becond undesirable to birds? I had thistle seed sit for a long time in my feeder and the birds were no longer interested. I figured it had just sat for too long in the feeder so I emptied the feeder, washed it and then put more of the same seed I had stored in an airtight container. I have gotten a finch here or there pick at it in the couple of months since but no where near the interest there was a year ago. Should I be buying a smaller bag of thistle seed or is there something else at work here?

I need to replace the meal worms after the 4" of rain we got in the last 36 hours, but I haven't noticed any takers either. I won't give up easily as it often takes them a while to find a new source.
