Damn I am old. Yes. My mother would lay a white sheet on the wooden floor and we would lay in front of a fan. Yes the fan was electric and when you talked into the metal blades you sounded funny. I think the white sheet was just a play to make us think it was a cooler temperature than a different color. About 1975 Dad made a place in the living room wall for a built in 220V window unit. It cooled the downstairs, I slept in the our fold up camper all summer. The fans were essential and the control knobs would fall off and get lost and the metal gaurds would rattle.
It's not too bad in the shade honestly.

Oh, I’m no stranger to no AC. Grandparents house all summer in southern Iowa, windows open, hot to sleep, lots of fans blowing, and it was fine, just what we knew. But I love AC damnit!Damn I am old. In our neighborhood, no rain makes them look crappy. 6” under normal for the year and crops not growing.I was north of Walnut going to Prarie Rose and some of the beans were sprayer burnt or really looked crappy, I dont know which. The taller beans looked better. The wells north of Avoca are still not producing what they should. That rural water district is hurting bad.

I was thinking about calling off our tee time but the wind helped a ton. I’ve played rounds in the upper 80’s that felt hotter because it was stillIt's not too bad in the shade honestly.

Saw that going to the sun road in Glacier NP, was closed because of snow.My daughter woke up this morning with snow on her Jeep. She is 30 miles SE of Banff.
Not yet, lack of rainThat isn’t the gall midge area, is it?
Grew up with no air, box fans in the windows blowing in or out depending on the wind direction. A couple extra box fans and maybe a oscillating fan to move air between rooms.Oh, I’m no stranger to no AC. Carbondale? That was my grandparents house and they lived in Southern Illinois.
Carbondale?
And houses were built with porches. Cooking occurred in summer kitchens to avoid heat buildup.Every house is different of course, but older homes, particularly in warmer climates, were often designed with some amount of airflow in mind. So you might not have AC, but air would flow through a house, potentially assisted by fans.
With AC, that design has changed. Homes are designed as sealed boxes to keep the conditioned air in and there are fewer considerations for moving outside air through a home.
I'm sure it would still be absolutely awful in weather like today, but not nearly as awful as a modern home with its AC out would be.
