Went out around 6a to go grocery shopping. Wanted to get out of the house before it got really soupy. Wind blowing hard from the south. Inside the store, the meat case and all of the refrigerated section glass was covered in condensation because of the humidity, and that was at the back of the store.

Drove the 4.5 miles home. I got the Gatorade and some other bottled drinks I had purchased out of the back of my SUV. I could feel condensation forming on them, and these were unrefrigerated drinks.

If you have to be out today...hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Shade, whether it be a big hat or an umbrella or a portable tent. And sunscreen. And reapply that sunscreen!

There is no debate at all. Could you imagine being inside with no AC today and tomorrow? **** that.
Damn I am old. Yes. My mother would lay a white sheet on the wooden floor and we would lay in front of a fan. Yes the fan was electric and when you talked into the metal blades you sounded funny. I think the white sheet was just a play to make us think it was a cooler temperature than a different color. About 1975 Dad made a place in the living room wall for a built in 220V window unit. It cooled the downstairs, I slept in the our fold up camper all summer. The fans were essential and the control knobs would fall off and get lost and the metal gaurds would rattle.

Every house is different of course, but older homes, particularly in warmer climates, were often designed with some amount of airflow in mind. So you might not have AC, but air would flow through a house, potentially assisted by fans.

With AC, that design has changed. Homes are designed as sealed boxes to keep the conditioned air in and there are fewer considerations for moving outside air through a home.

I'm sure it would still be absolutely awful in weather like today, but not nearly as awful as a modern home with its AC out would be.

Our area of SW IA has missed most of the recent rains. Need one at this point.
I was north of Walnut going to Prarie Rose and some of the beans were sprayer burnt or really looked crappy, I dont know which. The taller beans looked better. The wells north of Avoca are still not producing what they should. That rural water district is hurting bad.

If I recall correctly, the 1993 rains started in mid June.
My recollection is different for Black Hawk Co. I always remember there were only two decent days to plant in '93, Mother's Day and Memorial Day. Traditionally days that could be used as a "break" day during a long spring workload but very much needed as a work day that year.
