Basically a catch basin / collection of runoff from the roof, gutters, and downspouts that can be diverted when full. Usually elevated so that gravity-fed discharge can fill watering cans or low-pressure hoses for irrigation (via valved drain port).

Stupid question, but how do you keep it from becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes?

How does a rain barrel work? We're on a well so I'm never sure if it's something we should explore.

I love mine but it's either all or none. In droughts you use it up way too fast and when it's raining consistently its always full with water you don't really need right away.

I lived in SI many years ago and have been to Pinckneyville a lot. They always have had an outstanding high school basketball program.

My grandparents grew up in the Red Bud/Waterloo IL area before moving to Iowa in the 50s or so

Grew up in a family of 7 in a 3 bedroom house with 1 bathroom and no AC. It was so hot during the summer there were nights my brother and I slept out on the back deck.

We thought we died and went to heaven when dad installed an attic fan. When he turned it on you could see the curtains move as air was being sucked into the house. Kind of a poor man's AC.

Of course mom and dad waited until we were all grown up and out of the house before they finally installed central AC.

I store water for garden and pool... mostly because we live in town and have a bit of a low driveway that collects during heavy downpours. its a fun hobby (im a nerd) but i wouldn't if i was on a well

I fill my birdbath daily just because it goes dry everyday! I cant imagine the moisture this wind sucks from the ground.
