Playoffs

TBH, I’m not sure I’d want to host a game. The offense did not look good in the cold. The passing game just didn’t connect and I don’t think our running game is good enough to compete in a CFP game. I’d actually like our chances going to Texas better than hosting a team like Penn State.
But it would be great exposure. :)

Good write-up. A few points:

If Boise loses to UNLV, Boise will drop like a rock and not be an at-large team. They will only be ranked around # 10 this week, as it is. Also, UNLV will get the P5 AQ invite but not jump the Big XII Champion.

However, if Clemson also wins the ACC, the Big XII Champion could move into the 3 seed spot (if UNLV wins the MWC) or the 4 seed spot (if Boise wins the MWC).

I am not concerned about at-large spots at all, as ISU will not be in cosideration if they lose the CCG, and I do not think either BYU (10-2) or Colorado (9-3) have enough juice to poach the final at-large spot from Alabama / South Carolina / Miami / SMU, etc. BYU should (win @ SMU) and Colorado could (Heisman Winner / Coach Prime, etc.), but I don't think they will jump those other teams.

If for some reason, the Big XII Champion does not get the Fiesta BYE and is the 5th AQ, I think there is a good chance that they get the #8 seed, so they can host a First Round Game. Of course, that would be just too damn logical!
Exactly. The field is basically set (once we know the MWC/Big XII CCG winners) except for one unknown if SMU wins (it’s probably going to be Alabama, it’s always Alabama).

If Clemson beats SMU to take the ACC spot, it’s probably still going to be SMU.

There’s really not a lot of drama with the at-large spots this year.

It's going to be a 3 loss SEC team.

But how can a 2 loss SMU be in the conversation but a 2 loss BYU is not?
Well I assume (which it’s the committee and they are dumbasses), that the committee won’t penalize a team for losing a 13th, conference championship game. So I’d hope they don’t really treat that as a loss for SMU (or any other loser in a conference championship).

I would be shocked if it’s not Bama regardless. We know how this stuff works.

They will release another rankings on Tuesday, won’t they? It’d be nice to know how these line up before next week to see if the committee will really hold to their guns about CCG’s not hurting a team.

I think you pinned it that the at large drama will be over a probably unworthy Alabama vs somebody else. I'm not sure SMU is really that great to be a lock with 2 losses other than their position in polls and if you don't want to punish a CCG loss. They hosted Big 12 #3 and lost, they aren't automatically better than our top teams.

It would be. But are we happy getting included, or do we want to try and win a game?
Winning a game would be great! Depends on the match-up more than the location. Getting the Fiesta BYE would be the best of both worlds IMO.

One thing we aren’t sure yet is how the committee will handle the schools who are not playing in championship games.
IMO, if they just added an L to everyone’s record that didn’t play in their respective CCG, that would balance out those that did and lost against those that didn’t even qualify for their CCGs.

That’s basically what I’m going by. It’s not that SMU would be most deserving, just that the committee knows they’d look silly if they go back on their word. On the other hand, Alabama, so … who knows.

It should not be Alabama. They are too up and down. On their best day they can beat any team, and on their worst day, they can lose to any team with a pulse.

That being said, if I am the #5 team, the last #12 I want to see coming to my house is Alabama. They are capable of beating any team. They just do not deserve the shot IMO.

How about a compromise: BYU (10-2) instead of S.M.U. (11-2)?

A three-loss team that lost to Vanderbilt AND Oklahoma? Oh, yeah, I agree with you that they don’t deserve a playoff spot. But the committee has them at 13 and three teams ahead of them lost this weekend (they’re not jumping Ohio State, but they’re definitely jumping Clemson and Miami is going to be right there with them).

And since the committee’s opinion holds more weight than yours or mine, here we are.

I am interested in your argument and would subscribe to your newsletter, lol.

However, BYU won’t be higher than 17 or 18 this week, while SMU will probably be 8. There’s simply no way a CCG loss to Clemson can make them switch spots.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m saying the committee has the narrative already in motion.
