Damn Ames cops seem to have been stepping up enforcement this year. I've noticed on multiple occasions they will stop & ID any young looking people with any drink in their hands - even just a solo cup. Saw them ticketing a couple girls in line for a porta potty a few weeks ago. What happened to letting them be if they're not causing problems/being blatantly obvious?

I thought the tailgating lots were sort of a “if you aren’t causing issues, we leave you alone” type deal.

I hate to see any restaurant go under. It just seems to be a really, really fickle industry. It's amazing how certain chains can go from being popular to being undersupported so quickly.
I've been to Old Chicago a handful of times and always thought the food was good. I haven't been in a few years, but I recall it always being busy when I'd go. It's just wild how things can go in and out of popularity so fast.

We should just become like most other nations and move the drinking age back to 18, when the state legally recognizes you as an adult anyways. I get that it's "up to the states" but no state is going to voluntarily lose federal highway funding for lowering the drinking age, so just make it a federal ruling.
The LAST thing that the Ames police should be doing is over-policing (actively searching for underage drinking) the tailgates on gamedays. Everyone connected with the City of Ames and ISU should be absolutely thrilled that we have the Gameday experience that we have on football Saturdays and should do nothing but encourage it to continue.
Incentivize positive behavior when it comes to drinking (or not drinking) instead of just trying to cash in on people's lives for having a good time.
I rarely hit the disagree or dumb button on posts, but college football and the GameDay experience should not be an open license for underage drinking, nor should the City of Ames and ISU encourage it.
So it's cool with you that police pop into people's tailgate that is causing ZERO issues and checking id's on 19 or 20 year old college kids who are having a few beers at their parent's tailgate who themselves are clearly ok with it? This very thing happens as I have witnessed it more than once. Yeah, by all means let's crack down on that really dangerous stuff.
Students can thank Pollard because they no longer have their own tailgating spot... Back in the day you were usually pretty safe in the student tailgating area but if you left you didn't really want to be carrying anything around. As long as things didn't get out of hand the cops typically left us be.
What is the RAS that these cops are using to stop someone who is holding a generic cup of liquid and asking for ID? If its a can or container that contains a label for Alcohol thats one thing, but a generic cup is another.
Iowa is NOT a stop an ID state.
Yep that's how it was for us. It was a really simple set of "rules" of don't be acting like a jack ass, don't be passing out, etc and the cops will not mess with you at all. Hell they would come through play some pong or bags and be on their way....

Fun fact for the younger crowd. Back in the early 1980's when the drinking age was 18, ISU allowed students to openly bring alcohol into the stadium and openly consume it. Heck bring in a full cooler of beer, that's cool. Not really tangent to the topic of this thread, but fun fact anyway.
The 'dumbs' to this post are dumb. Some of you must not have been much fun to hang out with back in school and/or you are hypocrite now. I wasn't suggesting that the Ames Police drive around the tailgating lots with coolers full of beer and hand them out to underage students. I merely said that OVER-POLICING the lots and specifically going out of your way to try to bust 19 or 20 year-olds having a few beers at their parent's tailgate who are causing ZERO issues is a bad idea. Be sure not to fall off of your high horse though.
The link from @mwwbbfan said they issued 16 citations for minor possession out of who knows how many minors that were drinking that day, doesn't exactly sound like they're kicking down doors or tent flaps.
Everyone know the ramifications for underage drinking. If you’re willing to risk it, go for it I guess, but being pissed that it’s getting policed is dumb.
