My thoughts on the first 3 years:
On court-our offense needs to change as we need more screening and movement in general. This is my only real gripe here.
Recruiting- we actually seem to doing better than most expected
Player Turnover- I think we're seeing how desparate Mac was his first couple years to get any players in here..and we're slowly upgrading talent. I think we'll see more turnover due to lack of PT as we continue to upgrade talent. The only truly real worrisome loss to me was WJ.
Off-Court- I'm a ways away from Ames but I've heard no rumors of in-fighting, grade issues or legal problems at all this year..that's refreshing.
W-L- I support Mac but I really think its time to start winning next year. Unfortunately, I don't think this will happen unless we get a new offensive scheme installed....MOTION offense, please...I hate the set plays philosophy.

Good post. I would love a motion-type offense. At times, we run something similar, and see good results. I'm always perplexed as to why we move away from it.

In McDermott's first 22 conference games we went 9-13, since then 3-19.

I have no idea what this means. But, it's a very telling statistic. Perhaps Greg wasn't handed all that bad of a situation?

I'd contend the Big 12 is far worse this year than in his first two seasons...yet we are losing more games.

I like Greg, I hope he can turn the ship around. But if you're ignoring this stat, you're head is in the sand.

These three years have been horrible. I have not seen improvement. I do believe that GMac needs to get one more year. But, if we are in the same boat again at the same time next year.....it is time for a change.

If we fail next year, you have to put blame on GMac for everything that has happened. Including Wesley Johnson's departure......heck, his call on Mike Taylor too. (I have had thoughts that he really was the problem in those situations.)... I can't believe that he got kicked off the team...and I don't care about his stories about picking his life up after that event. GMAC could have looked over that kid, suspened him for a number of games that year....and mentored him into a good college student. He wanted him gone because he wasn't playing his slow *** BB. THis all means that his recruiting efforts are poor and will continue to be poor.

Issues on this years team: Boozer needs to be playing more. I like his hustle, the way he tries to create....and getting Brackins the ball....this kid seems to "get it." Yet, he doesn't get near the minutes he should. This makes me question the coach, and the way he has looked at ability and talent. Heck, Booz should be starting over a weak Peterson. WE are 2-10 in conference.....why not make a change in philosophy? There is no way a guy like that should be starting in the Big 12 Conference.

Set plays on the offensive side of the ball has not gone well. It goes well for Brackins at times....but at 2-10...this should not be the main philosophy......maybe next year...if the new guys can produce. I believe we need more of a motion offense from time to time.

Again, I believe that he needs to be given one more year. If we have a similar season like this one......he needs to be fired.

I want a guy that that is going to show he can find talent....and lead us to Big 12 titles again. IF we fail next year, GMac is just not going to be the guy...ever. And it is too bad, he is a good person - with a good family. But the ISU faithful want to win again.

* Tim Floyd was the next best at 30 wins and 30 losses

Ok ... but give me winning percentages in conference play.

Orr: 40%
Morgan: 46%
Mac: 26%

I think mcdermott has completeley ruined hilton coliseum and the magic, i also think hes slowly turning us into one of the worst college basketball programs in the big 12, and overall...we have alot of talented players but he cant coach them well

The numbers (both wins, losses and player retention) don't lie. This has been a complete failure so far and I really don't see it getting better. Even with the modest talent we have, he's not able to coach them up to a Big 12 level. If/when Brackins leaves we'll be at our usual spot at the begining of next year - a big gaping hole where the "star player" was before he left/got kicked off the team.

It is hard to believe that mcdermott has not had a player play three seasons for him. The only player that has been with the program for three seasons is Alex Thompson and he sat out the first season. I thought it was a terrible decision to bring him into the fold.

This team will never excel until we get a two that can create and be quick enough to get his own shot. Plus we need an athletic three. I think we are about the only team with a white two guard.


The best thing that could happen to this program is for Haluska,
Peterson, and Thompson to graduate. None of them have any business playing in the big 12. Diante Garrett is a year away. Brackins is the only legit big 12 starter we have and he is top five player in the league. Garrett will be a legit big 12 guard after one more offseason of improvement.

I am optimistic about Hamilton, Boozer, Eik, and Buckley. I think the all look to be good young players. I think that Boozer should be starting over Peterson in my opionion. Hopefully next season a new comers will be able to help us, we need a suprise starter.

I am frustrated that this team can't dig down deep to beat an average k-state team at home.

Actually, Morgan is the one who let Thompson walk on. So unless you want to blame McDermott for not kicking him to the curb, you have no arguement in regards to Alex. (who, by the way, has been an awfully good defensive player for us)

Huh??? Iowa State lands Hawkeye big man Thompson

The Cyclones received the transfer of Alex Thompson from the University of Iowa, which will reunite Ames High School alumni Thompson and ISU center Ross Marsden starting next season.

Thompson has to sit out a year with the Cyclones because of NCAA transfer rules and will be eligible to play starting with the 2007-08 season. He will be eligible to play two seasons with Iowa State.

"I'm definitely excited about playing for Greg McDermott and working for what he's trying to do at Iowa State," Thompson said in a conference call Thursday. "When I met with him I was really impressed with his staff and what he had to say."

Thompson was granted a release from his scholarship from the Hawkeyes and sent transfer papers only to Iowa State. Thompson said he wanted to talk to Iowa State before anybody other team.

"I just wanted to talk to coach McDermott and see what he had to say before I listened to everyone else," Thompson said. "Everything he had to say just sounded really good to me."

RPI.com has slipped us from #120 in Jan to #154 in the country. We are closer to Colorado than rest of the league. This may be the lowest we have been rated for 28 years.

I think the worst thing Greg did for himself was winning the games he did in year one. If he would have went scorched earth, people might be a little more lenient, but it's like he tried treading between complete rebuild and trying to cram square pegs into round holes. And it hasn't really worked.

Yeah, it was definitely a questionable strategy...and one that suggests that McDermott was, and probably still is, kind of in over his head. I think the fact that we are recruiting 1-year Jucos at this point is pretty revealing.
