thoughts on the first three seasons for mcdermott...

Mcdermott is terrible

His record in the big 12 is 12-32

That would be okay if he was building something.

But the problem is that we get worse in the Big XII every year:

Year 1: 6-10
Year 2: 4-12
Year 3: 2-10 so far

No Excuses.......

But you do realize that in the History of ISU Mens Basketball 1908 to the present we have only 1 single Coach with a winning conference record.....?

Larry Eustachy....42 wins and 38 losses

* Tim Floyd was the next best at 30 wins and 30 losses

I am excited about the talent next years team will have.

Brackins isn't going anywhere.

Gilstrap
Colvin
Boozer
Lucca
Christiansen
Buckley
Wes another year older
Diante
Hamilton
Pomlee who knows
VanderBeeken

We will run very deep. Probably the deepest we have ever been in the history of ISU. Granted when we weren't deep we had some major studs. I think this season sucks and I can't wait for it to be over. I am looking forward to next year. Improvement will come. If it doesn't, we will start over again with a new coach. He has to show improvement. Don't get your hopes on things turning around quickly, it's not going to happen. I just don't want to turn into Nebraska football where they think they are going to win a national title every year.

I expect good things from our BB program because we had a great run in the 80's 90's and early 2000's.

I am pulling for you Greg. But show some improvement please.

I too am very excited about all of these guys coming back and joining us for next year. With all of this tallent and Coach Mac's offensive scheme, I see us scoring 55 to 56 a game next year with no problem!

No matter who comes in, it's the same boring baseketball!

Coach Mac seems to know how to game plan fairly well----- on the defensive end.

His offensive game planning for Big 12 type play... Im not sure.

Fact is he has brought in some good players. (Brackins, Wes, Mike T, JVB, DG etc) that have shown some solid talent.

Fact also is he has brought WAY WAY WAY too many not so great players on scholarship as well. That is the part that bothers me most. You can not have such a talent drop when you need immediate impact players. Too many guys seem very one dimensional with their skills. Boozer and Jiris progression gives me hope of his ability to turn guys into better players in their second year.

As long as we win, the games can be as ugly or boring as they want.

Next year is everything for Coach Mac and he knows it. Year 5 doesn't look too promising when you consider Brackins and Gilstrap will be gone. I hope we do well enough next year to warrant giving McD a 1-2 year extension because if we don't, he's likely done following a .500 season in '11. It could be similar to the Alford situation in IC a couple years ago. A messy situation that will further complicated the program.

Next year it's absolutely critical that we win and win big.

His offensive game planning for Big 12 type play... Im not sure. It's tough, because when you have someone like Brackins, you use him, but our development of the offense for other players is lacking. Imagine what Craig could do if teams weren't focusing on him

We have a lot of role players, where, to be continually successful in the Big 12, you have to have players that are multidimensional.

Solid synopsis.

I had not even thought about it until it was mentioned on the news tonight, but he has not had a winning season for 3 years (assuming we will not finish above this year). My question is what other major conference school sticks with a guy after 3 straight losing seasons, especially with those being the first three years? At what point do we realize that this may not be a winning formula? I know he has run into some bad luck but being a Big 12 school you should at least win half your games, especially when we don't play a particularly tough schedule. I would love to know (but am far too lazy to look up) how many other major conference teams have had overall losing records the past 3 years, and additionally how many of those schools retained their coach over that period of time.

it is very rare to have great white two guards hoiberg and hornacek are a dime a dozen. How about willie warren, i would take a guy with 3/4 of his ablility. Its not about race but it is at the same time. I want a Willoughby(sp.)
What are you smoking, With Hornacek or Hoiberg on this team we are talking about the NCAA tourny and a contract extension for McDermott because he is such a great coach. Those guys are winners.

Look at McDermott's past stops. It takes him 3 years to bottom out. Due to the guard turnover in years 1 and 2 he looks to be a year behind here. We are really lacking a player thats quick enough to break down the defense with dribble penetration and defend at the point. I am sick of loosing but still not loosing faith in McDermott. His basketball style fits ISU just like Eustachy and Floyd. Imagine if Wesley Johnson were still here this season would look different. The margin between victory and defeat is usually slim. He would be enough to make this a winning season.

Ok, Fire Pollard and hire a new A.D.
That should buy McDermott enough time to at least start a new season.
If Pollard is really a team player, he should be honored to take one for the team.

In McDermott's first 22 conference games we went 9-13, since then 3-19.

Doesn't seem like our talent has dropped off that severely. Can it be that the other Big 12 coaches have figured out how to stop our offense.

The chances of all of these guys actually being on the team next year are slim to none. Tell me the last season where ISU had everyone back and all the new comers show up?

This team will never excel until we get a two that can create and be quick enough to get his own shot. Plus we need an athletic three. I think we are about the only team with a white two guard.

Imagine the backlash of this statement if it included the word 'Black' instead of 'White'. Pretty racist of you - singaling out a race of athlete in a derogatory way.

This is a very sobering fact. Add in the opinion of many that the Big 12 was probably stronger for the first half of these games than the last half and this is very, very disturbing.

I cannot believe we still have some people bringing race up. I know that Iowa is not a very diverse state in terms of its population but race has nothing to do with the type of basketball player or athlete you are...there are plenty of athletic white guys that can play and plenty of un-athletic black guys that cannot. I cannot help but think, in light of these type of comments, that race was a factor why some did not support Morgan and are going down with the ship behind McDermott.

Here we are again with people listing out our roster for next year and telling us that next year is the year. This same phenomenon happened last year. Let's see, how did that work out? We need to start living in the present rather than wishing on a future...the proverbial next year that never comes. I personally am sick of seeing threads about recruits that are freshmen and sophomores in HS. I don't read them but it is amazing how many are started on this site.

And the excuses...mercy. As Bill Parcells has said...you are who your record says you are.

My thoughts on the first 3 years:
On court-our offense needs to change as we need more screening and movement in general. This is my only real gripe here.
Recruiting- we actually seem to doing better than most expected
Player Turnover- I think we're seeing how desparate Mac was his first couple years to get any players in here..and we're slowly upgrading talent. I think we'll see more turnover due to lack of PT as we continue to upgrade talent. The only truly real worrisome loss to me was WJ.
Off-Court- I'm a ways away from Ames but I've heard no rumors of in-fighting, grade issues or legal problems at all this year..that's refreshing.
W-L- I support Mac but I really think its time to start winning next year. Unfortunately, I don't think this will happen unless we get a new offensive scheme installed....MOTION offense, please...I hate the set plays philosophy.

I think those threads dropped drastically with the departure of WJ. You can't lose a player of that caliber, not have a replacement and expect to win.
