Interesting. When and who were the players?

No doubt. When has this happened other than for walk ons?

I'm curious for an example too...

I'm not the OP, but I can answer this one, it's easy. :biggrin:

When Alex Thompson originally transferred "home", it was with the understanding that if the roster was too crowded one of his latter two seasons, he would pay his own way until the situation resolved. There was more specific language than that, perhaps involving two of his three years being on scholarship under some contingency basis, but I don't recall the exact details.

Unfortunately, with all of the transfers (and Mike Taylor being booted), this issue became a moot point.

I'm not sure whether it was a gentleman's agreement or on a contractual basis, because a similar situation arose several years ago when a football player from Urbandale signed a contract to walk on, with the understanding that he would be put on scholarship after two years, when one became available. Unfortunately for him, he wasn't on the team two years later.

However, it isn't terribly difficult to imagine a similar scenario possibly having occurred among current players.

I believe that Chim Kadima and Jordan Dykstra would be the two Gilstrap/Vanderbeken schollies--though perhaps I miscounted. Anything after that is speculation.

You are correct. If Gilstrap gets granted a 2nd year, which looks not good, than we are one over the limit right now.

Personally, I don't think he'll even apply. If he has a good year, he'll either be off to Europe or the NBA--the guy has a family to support. And if it's an issue of getting his degree, he probably doesn't need to be playing basketball to get his last year paid for.

While I agree with that, I think I remember either kg or cyismydog saying that the staff is already working to put together a case for his second year. I'll try to find it.

It may work itself out, but as it stands, there will be no open scholarships unless someone transfers or goes off scholarship or leaves.

I still don't ever get Garrett playing the 2. I just don't see him productive in that role at all. If he was, then why don't we ever see a Buckley/Garrett line up? I'm just not at all excited to see a guy that can't shoot playing the 2 position.

Perhaps DG is our point guard this year, and Buckley is his backup. Too difficult to change mid-season (especially mid-conference).

Next year they can work all off-season on DG's role at the 2.

I'm just saying perhaps . . .

There was a point in time when we did have a TRUE center. Jared Homan, anyone remember him? Athletic, agressive, and someone you did not want to **** off. Every team in the big 12 needs a big body in the middle to get on the boards and just occupy a defendor on offense. Hamilton will be that guy the next few years!

Another thought I have had about an opening in a scholly was with Dykstra. I haven't hear much on him latley but I remember hearing a few months ago that we may have not even gotten the best on his 1A hs team with Heemstra proving to be something. I know its not the best move to get rid of a scholly for a kid but maybe McD knows he may have to do it if there is that much of a talent difference between him and Ejim since he may not be here much longer... Again this could be way off base but maybe a possibility that McD hints to Dykstra he may be better off in a smaller conference.

Not true whatsoever. Heemstra isn't good enough to play for ISU, from what I've heard, and Dykstra is good. In a recent article I read, it said that Dykstra is being forced to play the three for his team, and sometimes the 1, since his team has no guards whatsoever. Dykstra is good. Enough said.

Not true whatsoever. Heemstra isn't good enough to play for ISU, from what I've heard, and Dykstra is good. In a recent article I read, it said that Dykstra is being forced to play the three for his team, and sometimes the 1, since his team has no guards whatsoever. Dykstra is good. Enough said.

Really? My cousin has been to two of their games this year and said that Heemstra mainly brings the ball down the court and Dykstra plays down low.

I believe the article was recent, and said Dykstra just made the move...I may recall it incorrectly though.

Interesting. Wouldn't be a bad thing for him to play some one. Would only help his game.

The ONLY concern I have w/ Dykstra is rebounding. He should be averaging a lot more boards against his level of competition.
