When Alex Thompson originally transferred "home", it was with the understanding that if the roster was too crowded one of his latter two seasons, he would pay his own way until the situation resolved. There was more specific language than that, perhaps involving two of his three years being on scholarship under some contingency basis, but I don't recall the exact details.
Unfortunately, with all of the transfers (and Mike Taylor being booted), this issue became a moot point.
I'm not sure whether it was a gentleman's agreement or on a contractual basis, because a similar situation arose several years ago when a football player from Urbandale signed a contract to walk on, with the understanding that he would be put on scholarship after two years, when one became available. Unfortunately for him, he wasn't on the team two years later.
However, it isn't terribly difficult to imagine a similar scenario possibly having occurred among current players.
