I know many don't like my posts on here on Marvel movies so I'll just give thoughts from my better half who is a Marvel guru and a few people around us what I overheard. Better half asked me halfway through if we could leave. I said no we paid and we're staying. Guy behind us said twice 'this is so ******* painful to watch'. There were definitely people that had a blast and that's what GotG does for many is humor so definitely a mixed bag.
Did your better half like the first two GotG movies?

I can’t wait until more on here see Guardians 3 and see where people net out. I have a theory on how much you enjoyed it or not, coupled with how much you like Phases 1-3 in the MCU. To me this movie should kind of prove to yourself if you are at/suffering from Marvel and superhero fatigue in general. IMO Guardians 3 was better than a very good portion of Phases 1-3 or at least in the ballpark of the good to great ones (aside from Infinity War, Winter Soldier and the absolute top 3-5 most seem to have).

And aside from maybe No Way Home, for me it easily outdoes everything else post Endgame to where it almost sticks out and you wonder if it’s the same company who has put out the past several movies.

I plan to write more of my thoughts later on, probably tomorrow, but IMO this is right up there with No Way Home and maybe even slightly surpasses Wakanda Forever as being the best Marvel movie since Endgame.

A 96% audience score and an A Cinema score is really quite solid and encouraging for me to see. Anymore, I tend to correlate a lot more with Rotten Tomatoes audience scores than critic scores, when that hasnt always been the case. The audience scores have drastically improved ever since RT instituted their verified audience scores, which essentially only allows people to vote who actually bought tickets through their sister site Fandango. For the same reason, it is also why TV audience scores are still mostly garbage, as there still is no way to verify people actually watch an episode of the show, much less the whole series. I only care about people's opinions who have either watched the whole movie or the entirety of a show.

This was supposed to be the first movie after endgame. Then Gunn got fired, COVID, etc.
And this would have helped Marvel a ton had this been right after Endgame and then No Way Home right after. The two following what was always going to be a letdown period would have helped bridge the gap with the fans imo because they both are cut from the Marvel we loved in Phases 1-3.

James Gunn seems to do his best work when hes working with off-beat B-Level comic book characters. I look forward to seeing this. :)

Saw it. Loved it. Felt like “old school Marvel” that we’ve been missing since Phase 3. Also some excellent meta-commentary regarding superhero fatigue that I will get into later when I’m not still at a theater. I’m going to miss James Gunn doing Marvel films. I hope he lights it up at DC.

Yep same, loved it. Actor who played the high evolutionary was phenomenal. Helluva job. He was terrifying. Adam was ok, a bit hammy this outing but I do like the actor. Better days ahead for him. Nice tie up for the trilogy.

Also a warning to some of you with younger or more sensitive kids, it’s more graphic, violent, and cussy than other marvel content. It’s got humor throughout but it’s definitely more intense.

Yes. Movies like this badly need a PG-15 rating to assign movies that aren’t quite R rated material but shouldn’t be PG-13.

This was a great send-off for the current Guardians. The High Evolutionary as a villain was also unexpectedly great as well. I genuinely hated his character for how cruel he was. Adam Warlock wasn’t what I expected but I get a sense that we will be seeing more of him in the future.

I really really enjoyed the commentary on Star Lord’s inability to accept that “his” Gamora was gone. I thought it would be tiring but making it a genuine moment to show Quill’s growth as a character was a great move.

Given that, this movie either purposefully or inadvertently served as a meta-commentary on the state of the MCU and superhero fatigue. I personally feel like it was James Gunn’s very subtle way of telling both the audience and Marvel Studios to, as Mantis so wisely put it, stop trying to leap from lilypad to lilypad in the pond and actually learn how to swim (i.e. stop putting so much emphasis on “tentpole” movies that only serve to reference each other)

As James Gunn was able to prove, it’s possible to make a superhero movie that relies on strong characters that the audience has grown to love and care about, and stakes that personally affect THEM in addition to the universe-level threat that they are responding to.

Alright, finally getting around to a longer review here...

So, this could end up being a TL;DR post, but just humor me if you could.

I've developed a personal rating system when it comes to movies (and TV shows as well lately) that's purely subjective but works for me.

I ask myself 3 questions about a movie, and if it's answered in the affirmative for those questions, or even 2 out of 3 I enjoy the movie.

1) Does it entertain me? At a base level do I find this movie entertaining; action, drama, comedy, etc., being genuinely entertained spans the genres.

2) Does it make me think? And it doesn't have to be profound or an earth-shattering, paradigm shifting thought, but does it make me think?

3) And perhaps the most important question, does the movie move me somehow emotionally? Joy, anger, sadness, any real emotion triggered by what I'm seeing on screen is a good thing IMO.

And a 4th factor is how often I look at my watch to check the time while I'm watching the movie. Obviously the more I check my watch the less I'm enjoying what I'm watching, and vice versa.

GOTG Vol. 3 answered all of those questions and then some for me, particularly #3 (and I didn't look at my watch one single time). And while the emotion I felt during a couple of certain scenes (I don't know how to do spoilers) was sadness to the point of feeling actual tears running down my face, I'd rather feel that for a few minutes than feel nothing.

And, as others have noted, we haven't always gotten that from recent Marvel movies after the end of the "Endgame" saga, so I feel like this movie was a very welcome and even overdue return to experiencing and witnessing just how awesome and magical the MCU can be in the right hands. As I think I mentioned earlier I am putting this into my personal Top 5 MCU movies; along with both of the final Avengers movies, Spiderman; No Way Home (another movie with plenty of emotion) and Civil War. Just an amazing movie all around, and it looks like it's well on its way to being a blockbuster.

One more note; I don't think I've ever hated a Marvel villain as much I came to despise The High Evolutionary. Thanos was brutal, of course, but there were moments of humanity in him as well. Not from this guy. Just pure unadulterated ego and madness. Credit to that actor for going all out and making him so hate-able.

I really enjoyed it and it was my second favorite post-Endgame MCU movie after No Way Home.

@dahliaclone What specifically made your significant other want to leave? That honestly surprises me if they enjoyed previous Marvel movies.
