Post game thoughts

How about putting someone else besides Petersen and Haluska on the Big 12's best player. Collins abused those two.

I actually thought Haluska did a decent job on Collins, nobody is going to shut him down completely. You're right about Petey, he couldn't keep up with him at all. That was pretty evident in the first five minutes of the game. You could put Cameron Lee on him, but that means giving up offense, (usually), not yesterday tho', Petey just didn't have it, and that's very unusual for him, he's generally one of most consistent guys.

The bottom line is they have much more talent and depth, and played lights out. Some nights are going to be like that. We're still not very good at helping on defense, and against teams with superior talent, that's going to show up as a glaring weakness.

Living in Corvallis, I have adopted the Beavs as my second favorite team. After watching both the Clones and Beavs play today, what annoys me is the fact that Robinson has managed to win back-to-back road games in the Pac10 in his 1st year with basically the same team that went winless last year in the conference and Mac in his 3rd year still "needs more time"!!!!!!!!!! WTF! I am tired of waiting for ISU to improve. Patience is a virtue .... I know, but I am starting to tire of waiting around for next year.

Hi Buggy...I don't want to BUG you so I will agree with you re gmac....

I dont know how much more time gmac is gonna get to turn this program around but I am starting to think that the best thing that ever happened to gmac was all those players er Taggart and co leaving ISU...Thus giving gmac an endless amount of time to turn this around...

I will leave you with this...In John Orr's first year he beat Drake and Lewis Lloyd with virtually a team of nobodies!!!

Now tahts coaching.....I do miss the good old days!!!!

Alot to reply to here...

It's really about defense. We ALLOWED open looks and KU didn't. They were going to try and take away Brackins down low while still rotating on shooters and let him and all out other bigs shoot anything outside of 10 feet. We couldn't guard the perimeter. When we try and crowd them they blow by, when we sag, they shoot... It had nothing to do with the SHOOTING.

Don't know what you saw, but I saw us force up alot of closely guarded threes, that doesn't scream open to me...

Position to me means movement to get open looks. Our only open looks were from big guys outside 10 feet. We have two guys that can hit that shot...

Exactly!

No, but he has had three years to bring in guys that can play over him...and he hasn't...

Sums it up...

See my points earlier. It's a whole lot easier to shoot a better percentage when one team gets open looks and the other team is forcing guarded shots...

I know you refuse to give the team any credit, but we clearly had open looks yesterday. I'm not sure how you could say otherwise.

College BB is about talent and guard play. We really don't heave either yet. I love the hustle of BP and SH, but the bottom line is they would not start for most Valley teams, if any. Collins could have dropped 50 on Peterson if he needed to. At least Haluska can play some D.

It simply baffles me why Boozer and Buckley don't play more. Garrett gave KU at least 8 points with getting his pocket picked. Collins scored about 20 with Peterson guarding him. Why not play the scholarship players more? Give them time to learn? The season is a loss anyway, its not like we are playing for a tournament bid. Bring in the new guys, I have seen enough of the walk on seniors to last me a lifetime.

GREAT POST! Totally agree! Boozer has performed well in the games that he has been in this year. I think he should be seeing more minutes as well. Also, with respect to your point about playing the young guys, this is where I am at as well. Thought we should have simply taken our lumps last year and allowed DG to run the point the entire season. Count me in with being tired of watching walk-ons trying to compete. They bust their humps and no one can deny their effort, but the talent simply isn't there.

I will give the TEAM credit, they played very tough dispited the talent advantage KU had. They just weren't put in a place to succeed...

I think you had some blinders on last night. They were put in a place to succeed, but the "TEAM" couldn't make the open looks.

Anyone watching Gameday? They should the high lights and actually had more Brackins high lights than KU high lights, and Bobby Knight said I don't care I want to talk about Butler, so he blah blah blahd about Butler while they were showing brackins high-lights. Then he ended it with we should be showing Butler and "not whoever the hell was playing Kansas" **** you Bob Knight

Yeah, a Butler team that is in the top 20 and is 18-1...how dare he talk about them! The gaul...BUTLER IS TOO YOUNG TO BE ANY GOOD. Did you know:

+ Of Butler's top 8...they have 3 freshman, 4 sophomores, and only 1 junior.

+ Their top player is a sophomore, the next 2 are freshmen, the next is the junior, and the fifth is another freshman. They top three off the bench are all sophs.

I WONDER IF BUTLER IS COMPLAINING ABOUT THEIR "YOUNG TEAM" OF GUYS THAT WERE NOT MCDONALD'S AAs?

So who besides Brackins and Vanderbeeken had OPEN LOOKS. At the game and watching the DVR this morning, not one guard got more than one open look. Lucca was running off screens shooting 22 ft fadeaways because he couldn't get a guy off him. We shot plenty of forced guarded shots, but not open the open looks KU was getting... You can put it on the players all you want I guess...

Uh, maybe we need Petersen out there because...he's our second-leading rebounder??? Think about that for a minute.
If some others had Petey's heart and effort (Lucca anyone?) we wouldn't need him so much...

I would have to agree, BUT we had our chances in this one despite the poor shooting as a team. When we cut the lead to six with a few minutes to go (3 or 4), hilton was coming alive, that had to have been the loudest of the game. As all of u seen after that moment we just couldn't convert on the offensive end. Can't complain about Brackins though, awesome performance.

we definately had open looks. like you said, when we cut it to 6, then stopped them, I think it was JVB that missed a wide open 3 at the top. the place would have exploded. something should have been done with Collins in the 1st half, he was incredible. but, if we make a few more shots, this would have been a diff game.

I dont think you should say everyone. Alot were excited to see them play but realists probably felt that they would not be game makers. Staiger has helped quite a few games and has been playing some decent ball, just not a difference maker yet. The other two need some development time and I knew they would. Dont take peoples excitement about new recruits away from them. Their energy is what keeps me excited about ISU sports from year to year. Sometimes they go a little overboard.

You can say whatever you want but Staiger specifically was built up to herculean proportions on here last year. I seem to recall a lot of talk about one of our best players not being able to help us because of the NCAA.

that was a difference also. Brackins and JVB were the ones with open looks. not peterson, lucca or other guards.

Wow, that's a convincing equation...

Here's mine:

We shot terrible as a "team."
Cyclones <> Good Team Shooting

They shot very well as a "team."
Jayhawks = Good Team Shooting.

Beyond that, the "Big XII" talent & styles of play were there on both sides in the game I watched. We just need a few guys besides CB to step up and make shots. They did not dominate us based on overbearing talent or style of play - we just didn't make our shots and they made theirs.

Kansas Shooting:
FGM-A | 3PM-A | FTM-A
31 for 61 | 6 for 13 | 14 for 18
50.80% | 46.20% | 77.80%

ISU Shooting:
FGM-A | 3PM-A | FTM-A
19 for 55 | 6 for 26 | 23 for 27
34.50% | 23.10% | 85.20%

You must factor in our defense, or lack thereof, was a major contributor to KUs success from the field.

To be positive, CB played fantastic. Hamilton is a quick learner. JVB made some shots. The defense improved. Like many posters have said, its about going out and getting talent, guys who can create their own shot, or can get fouled. It sounds like we have some of those coming in next year. KU has McD All-Americans sitting on their bench, we have walkons. The outcome should not really shock anyone.

This point you make is spot on...the teams that make a run in the NCAAs always have solid guards. Look at ISUs best teams...mid 80s and turn of century...both had top notch guards. Garrett's game is lacking on a number of levels. Buckley never gets in, Boozer doesn't get much time, everyone else seems to be a walk on type guy (Peterson, Haluska, Eikmeier). We have to shore up the backcourt.

All I can say is where is Wesley Johnson when you need him! For God sake, imagine the combination of Brackins and Johnson on the court right now. Johnson transferring makes me sick!!!!

Surely you remember our resident insider (kg cylcone) telling us that he was a cancer and we would be better off without him...don't you?

They play hustle basketball.

Does the McD system encourage hustle or does it encourage people to hold their place and stand around or does it allow something in between?
