Why is Lucca Staiger an almost complete bust?

So true. I can remember the Indiana glory days under Knight. They had guys every year just like Lucca - 6'5" - 6'6", good shooters, not very quick, shot faking all day and driving, then passing off for dunks or going to the line. If you can shoot, the whole court opens up...
Funny, I remember those same guys (from Alford onward) requiring three, four, five screens just to scrape the defender off to get their shot off. That didn't seem like an "open court" to me.

Nope, that's the motion offense and what happens when you move without the ball...

I don't recall referencing Alford, but instead swing forwards like Randy Wittman, Tom Abernethy, even bigger forwards like Ted Kitchell. None were fast, but all could shoot. Then, shot fakes were effective. And yet, even Alford used those, just to get a defender to get in the air so he could draw a foul. Alford lived at the free throw line.

Sorry, I decided to make another point, and decided to bring back my old thread to do it.

In another thread titled "Different between win/loss: Lucca", a person named Tornado man said this:

I'm sorry, we're a better team with Boozer on the floor in place of Staiger. Our comeback in the second half came with Lucca on the bench. Boozer plays physical, gets rebounds, gives the team energy by flying all over the court - all the thing Lucca does not. He runs around on the court like he's 50 years old.

Of course, he didn't get flamed repeatedly for it, even though I basically said the same thing, maybe in a bit more of a caustic way.

Lucca needs to crash to the basket, not stand around the three-point line. Nebraska had guys shorter than ME (I'm 5-10) crashing to the basket. Why can't a guy 6-and-a-half feet tall and 225 friggin' pounds do that?

Sorry. I will not go away on this. Not when I'm right.

No, Cyclone42 - you are right.

I saw a lot of standing around. SH moves the most and I blame the offensive scheme. It is not suited for the Big 12. Yes, we stand around too much and do not set picks and do not rebound that well. Yes, that is a problem in conference.

I just had to bring this back!
You just have to know that Lucca has to learn to not stand around that three-point line!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:biglaugh:

Now that we have other outside players and inside players that can all score Lucca appears to be getting more open looks and thus is able to create a rythm. However, he does stiff force it at times.

I hope he takes them when the open shot is available but doesn't force where there is no need.

Did you bookmark this thread from a year ago, just waiting to drop the bomb? I must say your dedication is impressive.

I am not ready to annoint Lucca as king or anything yet. Remember, he did this against Drake last year...
I hope he does well...

I LIKE the guy, Bryce.
He didn't HAVE to come back and help us out, he could have stayed in Germany.
I am thrilled for him.
I have no patience with people that are so critical of our own.
If you can't be supportive, why bother posting?
Otherwise, why don't you just tell Lucca in person?
Tell the guy in person if you have a beef, and if you can't or don't have the ****'s to do it, then you probably shouldn't, should you?

Just my opinion of course.

wow...dumb thread. We played a Drake's ZONE defense and 3's are open in zone so you need shooters...Lucca is a shooter. He is doing his job at an extremely high level. I think any player who hits 10 three's in a game deserve praise!!! Great job Lucca!

OK, go ahead, bring up an old thread from a year ago.

I will point out that a lot can change in a year, and Staiger has definitely changed a lot. He has gotten rid of the "baby fat", and loots slimmer and more muscular.

When I posted this a year ago, he was somewhat of a 'bust' at the time. He was hot-and-cold from beyond the 3-point arc, and was usually very cold on the road. It was painful watching road games in which he would make miss after miss after miss from 3-point land, which would usually result in a rebound and a lay-in by the other team. He was also ineffective on the defensive side. So when he wasn't hitting the 3's, he had an overall negative affect on the team.

It is very much worth noting that this record of 10 three-point shots made is from a road game.

Yeah, I loved seeing him have a huge game but I had the same feeling as the OPer at the time of the first post.
