There's a lot of teams that don't have the best OL in the world and guess what.... they scheme around that weakness. Screens, quick passing game, misdirection in the running game instead of just running into a brick wall every play, etc, etc. Downfield passes do NOT take that long for the QB to throw.... I never understand why people don't get that?
I think long-term the solution to fix the offense is going to be doing a better job consistently developing NFL talent at the offensive line and tight end positions.
I'm not close-enough to the program to have a great understanding of personnel strengths and weaknesses nor do I watch the game film, so pretty much the only advice I could give is armchair advice lol (that's why I think an expert analysis weekly program would be sweet haha)
I think there's got to be something we could hodgepodge together for this year though to have an adequate offense. Some random ideas would be:
* Introduce more designed QB running concepts
* Maybe do some power runs with Rus
* Get Shaw involved and throw some deep fades to him
* Mix up some formations/misdirections to help not telegraph what we're going to do
* Help Dekkers work through his progressions better and not target/lock down on his receivers (maybe him running the ball more would help him get out of his own head)
* Maybe there are some young guys that could provide a spark
I don't go to the practices or anything, so I don't know what the weaknesses and strengths are of the personnel so some of these could be bad ideas lol
We were on the 50 yard line twice and failed to get a first down yesterday. Just moving the ball a little bit forward and not shanking the field goal would have got us the W.

Sure a lot of fans wanted to fry the kicker. They just did it in a passive aggressive manner by criticizing the coaching decision instead.
A scholarship kicker should be able to make 75% of kicks under 45 yards. Last week Gilbert goes 1-4, this week 3-3. It's not like Gilbert suddenly improved this week. Players make mistakes or don't execute, it's reality. For kickers, there is no grey area- they make it or miss it.
If Gilbert made the 38 yard FG to tie the game last week- all would be good. But the kid missed and NOW Monday morning QB's are like vultures on a carcass.

We got the ball twice on the 50 yd line late in the game, just needing a FG to win, and couldn't move the ball at all.
The problem was with CMC sending him back out there after doinking two kicks and it is less than a yard.
We have a 300 lb lineman that was a QB in high school. Have we even seen him used once in short yardage?
As for just do what the Chiefs do, no. But you certainly can look at their schemes and do knockoffs with the talent we have.
IIRC, we have yet to run a jet sweep to punish teams for slanting their DEs in and giving up the outside.
We have a strong armed quarterback. Madden said if you have one of those, you take at least one deep shot every quarter to keep the defense honest.
You must not have read very hard since you're doing exactly what I referred to as a response.
This is like last basketball season when people thought ISU should just do back cuts and dribble drive in the middle of faster, longer defenders that routinely swatted layups to the third row.
None of those ISU football players suck and there's talent. Overall it's pretty average talent.
Please state specifically what ISU should or can do with the personnel available, not just what you want to see because more talented teams do it.
Wasn't Gene Chizek hired by Auburn? Did he ever take ISU to a bowl game.
Campbell is a football coach, he would be happy at more than just the "Big Boys". That is just a misconception of a lot of fans.
There will be a lot of good head coaching jobs out there that Campbell would be a great choice and winning might be easier than ISU. Arizona and Georgia Tech come to mind.

I wonder if RBs crowding the line a bit more to just help get some sort of movement forward would help for quick hitters.
I like Dekkers on a roll out if there's any sort of run game however his touch in close range is oddly non existent.
He was previously a DC at Auburn. Chizik and Jay Jacobs were good friends. Don’t see that happening for Campbell.
Another thought I had is that if our TE's aren't good this year and aren't good at run blocking, can we just throw another lineman out there in a TE jersey or something?

i agree with this. i'll add i haven't had much issue with play calling. Where my issues lie is the lack of execution, the oline play (especially inside the 30 of the opponents), and SP (execution). I believe dekkers was injured in games 3-4 impacting his play... and we know brock has been hurt.
what stuck out to me as the pivot to the loss last night was when silas asked to come out while we were humming along ... stay in there.. get your TD. And they we put brock out there... and he goes down. it wasn't all or most of silas fault... but man... you gotta stay out there.
So you would run misdirection? What do you counter with if it gets blown up? What do you run to set it up? How open have the receivers been for long throws? Does Dekkers have adequate time often?
What are you seeing that leads you to believe that ISU can just 'do' these things?

What is the mantra by the national media? It's ISU is one of the hardest places to win among P5 schools.
