So re-reading "Can I Keep My Jersey" last week I had a thought. I think I recall someone saying Mr. Barnes was pretty intelligent. Is it possible we're counting on Brackins to the NBA in 2010, Barnes to take an academic scholarship, and Kelm to pick up Brackins' open scholarship? Paul Shirley came to Iowa State on an academic scholarship which triggered the same thought process with Harrison. (yes, I'm aware I'm nuts)
I know you won't see this but there are probably a dozen in state kids that can add every bot of toughness as a practice player without taking a scholarship... I have no doubt that Mann was a very good and tough HS player, but he has shown me NOTHING in games to make me think he will ever play more than a handfull of minutes a game in the Big 12.
You sure can tell from the five minutes he's played so far.:wink: Mann is better than a lot of you give him credit for.
Coaching dictum: A team plays in a game only as well as it practices.
Do you dispute that coaches believe fervently that this doctrine is a truism? I don't know of a coach who doesn't place the highest importance on quality practices.
Practice is the foundation for what takes place in games. Therefore, who practices is key, the way I see it. I could be wrong, though. I'll try to ask GMac about this issue during his next call-in show.
I was injured all but maybe 1 game during CCL.

Born June 2, 1989, in Overland Park, Kan...son of Michael and Connie Mann...pre-business major...brother, Nathan, played basketball at William & Mary, scoring over 1,000 points and recording the second-most 3-pointers in school history (215)...chose Iowa State over Iowa, Creighton and Loyola Chicago.
He averaged a double double for two years in Kansas 5A competition. He was an all state selection. He had offers from Creighton and Iowa along with some smaller schools.
Mann may not work out but there is nothing to suggest he isn't a good player. I suspect he just isn't getting the offense yet or maybe he isn't playing decent D. McD doesn't let those play who can't play D.
Hey, cyismydog, you got any information about what the coaches think of Mann's potential? Do they believe he's a wasted scholarship, or do they see a young player with the potential to develop?
Mann, the kid's halfway through his freshman year and some here believe they have the ability to measure his current talent and extrapolate from five minutes of game action that the kid has no future here. Mann alive.
Judging by the Capital City League, Charles boozer should be scoring 40 points a game, and Craig Brackins plays guard.

Honestly, Mann is just what the staff expected, and they are happy with him, and what he brings to the table. He is a very good rebounder, and a pretty good defender.

Mann wouldn't be a wasted scholarship if we hasn't given out 6 other scholarships during the same year. Practice players are very valuable. I just don't think we should have offered him when we did.
If this part is true, why isn't he playing some? I could see him coming in when Brackins takes a breather.
Hmmmmm. So we can't judge him by the 5 minutes he has played, and we can't judge him by watching him play against his peers. Good to know
Cory Johnson averaged 30 a game in the cap city league and I never thought he would be more than a hustle guy every 5 to 10 minutes a game. I saw Boozer score a lot of points but never thought he was a scorer. I do think he should play A LOT more minutes than he does. He is the most athletic guard we have and can get some long rebounds that others don't.
Also, there is a reason GMAC didn't redshirt him. What does he have to gain from it? Mann is what he is, and that is a hustle player. A year off isn't going to do anything for him or his game.
More because of match-ups, and he hasn't mastered the offense or defense yet, much like Buckley.
Agreed we dished out too many scholly's last season. BUT, I'm not in agreement on Mann's ability. I think we just don't know. Who really thought he was going to come in and tear it up his first year? I think he would need to be a 5 star player to do that and he wasn't. Give him a year or two. I don't think he'll be a wasted scholly.
Remember, we competed for and won Clinton's committment against other decent Bball schools. If we would had lost his committment to, say, Iowa, people would have been on this board complaining how we lost another one and this time to Iowa.
What is going to change in the next 4 years to make him a better matchup against our opponents?
I am coming off way to harsh on Mann and I apologize. I will back off now. I wouldn't be so upset over his scholarship if it hadn't come w/ 6 others at the same time.
At the time you are probably right. As of now we probably wouldn't care all that much.
The scholly I question is Chistopherson. I've never seen the guy play at all but he sounds like a quicker Lucca and larger Eik. With the number of guards we had coming in, why bring in a guy who can't contribute immediately and then eats up a scholly for another 3 years. Maybe I eat a bunch of crow on this dude and he turns out to be a real stud but without seeing the future, I don't get his signing. Even saving just 1 scholarship last year could have helped up big time for 2010.
