John Deere strike imminent?

The Ankeny workers voted 51% in favor. I feel for those guys.

Sounds like Deere made some pretty significant concessions in this last offer, so I bet they won't be making any more and they'll just wait the workers out.

Until they tie COLA raises to inflation, it's going to keep getting voted down.

They've got to have Waterloo to get it passed and they aren't close.

They don’t need Waterloo to pass it. The last one passed and it was voted down in Waterloo by a similar percentage in 2015.

I haven’t done the math or anything but I wonder what kind of raise you’d need to get in order for a raise from a strike to pay off. Let’s say they strike for a month how big does that raise need to be before they didn’t lose money in the deal.

How much money is John Deere willing to lose by not making equipment to sell for another vote?

In a one year period it would have to be a little over an 8% bump I think? If you only work 11 months (~92%) you'd need 108% the next year to cover. It's a real simplistic way to look at.

I've always kind of thought that's what the increase in the ratification bonus was for

Eh, they'll still sell the equipment. Might be a short term bump, but the demand is still there. They might lose some farmers, but the guys who are looking at buying green stuff are probably going to stay buying green stuff. They'll definetly lose short term sales, but when the line opens back up they'll just keep cranking the stuff out as fast as they can.

Now, if we get into a 6+ month scenario then everything changes. The question is who folds first at that point? I'm guessing Deere can survive 6 months with no production (it'll be lean, but they aren't having to pay labor). Don't know if the workers can handle 6 months with no real income.

Management probably knows a number. Depends on how productive the salaried employees are, how much the increases are, etc. they have to have a number in mind.

With TPI in Newton closing next month I wonder if they try to get some of those folks to cross the line or something. There are a ton of possible outcomes here.

$0 copays, $0 deductibles, and paying $0 for health insurance premiums seems amazing. Depending on your family, that alone could be worth thousands of $ per year.

Yeah I’d be really interested in what the total compensation profile looks like.

Possibly 5 figures annually. Figuring in the signing bonus, the retirement bonus, the raise that's far more than most of the rest of the country has seen over the past several years, I don't know how they keep the public perception of the man getting screwed by the corporation. They're going to be seen as unreasonable very quickly

There’s a lot of pissed of people right now that realize they’re playing roulette with their health right now. UAW’s insurance with Deere is very good.
