Just got an assessment for one of the building sites at the farm. Nothing new over 15 years, a 32% assessment bump. Knew the county was strapped but holy mother of Mary. That is going to hurt.

Any chance of appealing?

Yeah, we just got bumped pretty good too. Only new things - roof on house 2 years ago, and last winter replaced culvert under driveway and hooked up to rural water (had well previously). Total cost spent = about 1/5 of increase in appraisal. Grrrrrr...

Did rural water just come by or did you just decide to hook up to it now? It went by my place a few yrs ago and I passed on it.

I knew my wife’s family put salt on everything but her grandma just put it on pizza and that is a whole new low.

I've done that on cheap day old reheated frozen pizza, but not on good fresh pizza.

Combination:

1) Six houses on the lane; we are the fifth. We bought the acre that the lane runs on last summer, so no more need to get permission from the developer (who for some strange reason held onto the easement acreage for 20+ years after moving off the lane). First three houses have rural water, end three have individual wells. Our end neighbor (house #6) decided to bring in rural water, and checked with us for the okay to cross our property. By throwing in with her, we shared equally the cost of the piping running down the lane past the 3rd house, and we each paid for our own private plumbing & hookup. We asked the fourth house if they wanted to throw in with us and divide the public pipe into thirds for cost, but he declined. Rural water told us that if he chooses to hook up later, he will be charged the 1/3 that he would have been charged now, and houses 5 & 6 (us & end neighbor) will receive a rebate. So much for his attempted end run around part of the cost. :)

2) Our softening and purifying system was aging out, and needed to be replaced. We've had a high mineral content in the filtered water; the dishwasher was rusting out and had to be replaced and the washing machine and one of the three toilets were getting past the point of cleaning all the scale off of or out of them. That expense would have been nearly as much as bringing in the rural water.

2) Then you add on the fun part about us alternating getting kidney stones every year or two (which may not have been exacerbated by the water mineral content, but it certainly didn't help). And my skin & hair are VERY grateful for the softer water. ;)

It kind of sucks having to pay a water bill now, but I think overall it was the best plan for us.

Kidney stones every year or two? You guys must be gluttons for punishment.

Fine, I guess...

Oh, and you can be proud. Applying for a job at ISU.
Probably over-qualified in terms of degree, but it's a pretty neat fit.
Until you back out of positions from every other school you've applied at that's not Iowa State you're still dead to me and you hate Iowa State.

Just in case you get the job and just Incase you happen to get a little BC in your class, how much of a tip does a B get. I’m cheap and don’t expect an A, so I can be content with Bs.
