OK, I want to try to say this in the nicest way possible, but...I personally could not care less what Matt Campbell thinks about LeBron, Baker Mayfield, Mike Leach, the WWE, what restaurants he likes or what he has on his DVR. If I had an hour of one-on-one time with the coach, I would want to save the small talk for after the interview is done. I mean, my first thought would be...going into spring, how do they try to replace Willie Harvey? DeAndre Payne? Montgomery? Butler? Seonbuchner? Peavy? Maybe ask about the new FB facility...how much input did he have? What's he like about the plans? What are some of the cool things about the new building and how will it fit in with what they currently have?

There are tons of FB related questions to ask. Thoughts on 3-4 vs 4-3, evolution of Leo/Star positions, strength and weight gains, how the new FR are doing so far, who's participating at pro day, what they want to accomplish this spring, how the new coaches are settling in, who have been the leaders over the winter and who are potential captains.

I love CW's work and appreciate what this site does, but for as limited of access as we get, I just hate seeing time on a podcast "wasted" by asking about what TV shows the coach is binging. I understand that it's a fine line and it's great to have a friendly relationship with the HC...and that there's some value to fans being able to see what he's really like outside of the buttoned up press conference situations, but I feel like if the opportunity is there to ask more FB questions and less non-FB questions (like cut in half), that would make for an even better podcast.

I'm sure I'll get ripped up for this post, but I actually consider it constructive criticism.

Even if Chris asked those questions, I don't think Matt would give much of an answer. He will likely give some coachspeak.

I would not expect full detailed answers on FB type questions. But, you can ask in a way to let him be vague with his answers...such as "who are some of the guys that you'll look at to replace Willie Harvey?". Other questions don't really have answers that need to be secretive...like any about the new FB facility.

That's not what the off the record podcast is about though. Its usually always 50% reflection on the past season and then just shooting the breeze. Campbell will give those other answers during spring ball.

I view the off the record podcasts as more a chance for us fans to get to know Campbell better as a guy instead of about the future of the program.

I'm sure CW will chime in at some point, but this is pretty accurate with how he views the podcast. There will be a time for all that stuff and, if I'm being honest, I can almost guarantee you Coach Campbell would rather do a podcast like this for an hour than the one the OP mentioned. He was asked a lot those questions during sit-down interviews every media outlet had with him several weeks ago and they will all be addressed heavily during spring ball. I understand different strokes for different folks but can promise you this was not a waste of a podcast. Off the Record is closer to what it would be like to sit down and have beers with Matt Campbell rather than trying to soak up all the information about next season possible.

Really need a livestream of CW and Campbell watching that alien documentary.

Yeah Stanz nails it. I don't have much more to add other than 99 percent of what we get from Campbell is buttoned up hardcore football talk. He does these with me because they are fun for him and also realizes it is a good way to showcase his personality to the fans. The objective of this podcast is not to dive insanely deep on Iowa State football but to give fans a different look at these newsmakers as human beings. I thought we've done a pretty good job of promoting them that way but if you feel duped by it, my apologies. There will be plenty of time for the diehard football stuff in coming months and as always, we will cover the hell out of that as well.

You know, I'd agree with you if there was ever an ON the record podcast. Yeah, there are press conferences and media availabilities. But, the timing is limited and they are really tight-lipped. Hell, we didn't even get a two-deep last spring if I remember right. I'd love to get a football-centered podcast where someone dives deep into actual football issues:

-News/thoughts on the new facility, plus the benefits for athletes and recruiting
-Replacing major contributors from last year
-Differences between the 4-2-5 they used their first year vs. the 3-3-5 they used the last two.
-Advantages to having a Midwest focus in recruiting
-Vetting process for recruits
-Scheduling of nonconference
-Using the Leo as a LB
-2/3 TE sets vs 4 wide
-Newest equipment additions to the weight room and other practice equipment
-How technology is affecting workouts/practice
-Strategy for early offers/offering more kids than most schools
-What they learned with the new RS rule
-What they learned/how they will change official visits with the December signing date
-If they have open scholarships, what walk-ons are most deserving
-What some of the off-field staff do day to day.

Maybe Campbell wouldn't be up for doing something like this and prefers the more "having a beer at the bar" kind of conversation. I just thought that it would be interesting to know some of his thoughts here. Flame away.

Nah, it's not duped at all. I understand the format and what you/he is going for. If that's what he's willing to do, then that's what we get. I just wish that there was a way to look a little more inside the curtain. Right now, Campbell has all the clout and leverage in the world. They canceled the spring game for example. If they were coming off of two 5-7s instead of 8-4s, I guarantee that wouldn't happen. And they would probably be a little more free with the information to the press. Winning cures everything and I'd rather see ISU win and hear about stuff that doesn't matter all that much than lose and know every detail.

See I would make the argument that we learned a lot about the program and what makes Campbell tick in the most recent podcast. Not Iowa State specific stuff, but how his mind works. How he builds a program. How he builds culture. HIs views on football philosophy. That's what I found most interesting.

All I know is, I’m going to have to look up “Operation Bluebook”. And, aside from sports, I never watch TV.

Seriously. This interview was an amazing insight into CMC’s football mind. Plus some “sittin’ on the porch shootin’ the breeze”.

I’m good with that.

Off the record...generally means they talk about things that aren't "on the record" IE, things they wouldn't talk about in the course of their daily jobs.

Yeah what the hell. You won’t get another chance in the next 7 months to talk to him again about football!

Definitely agree. If you didn't learn about him as a football coach and how this program works, then you weren't paying attention. He doesn't have time to watch TV shows because they are crushing the three weeks before Spring camp to dissect and rebuild their own fundamentals as coaches. That is fascinating to think about. He saves the important conversations about nitty gritty football for guys like Brock Purdy during recruitment. I'm okay with that.

Plus, there is one other thing that is vitally important. He likes Chris and wants to do these sorts of things. And that means that Chris gets lots of additional access too. Chris is probably dropping gems on us through the year that we don't even know came from other conversations with Campbell.

Those things are related. The guy doesn't want to have a spring game. He keeps the ship tight. He talks about all of the football related stuff probably 12-14 hours a day. He probably doesn't want to do it for another hour.

Stanz and Woody do one every week.

No, no they don't. I agree with everything else you said though.
