The wife and I are considering going to the game on Saturday. Any suggestions on the best places to stay (for the price) in Ames?

Edit: and are there any that would be walking distance to Hilton?

Gateway is decent, but it's getting pretty old. It could use an remodel. Hilton Garden on the West side isn't bad. I believe that's where recruits have stayed on their official visits.

Pick any of the relatively new ones and don't pick the Gateway would be my suggestion, emphasis on don't pick the Gateway, that **** is old and worn down. The two over by Perfect Games are newish and are probably nice/cheap, a Hilton Garden Inn and a Sleep Inn I believe.

Disagree about the Gateway. It is old as 3TrueFans says, but it isn't that worn down. It may have a nostalgia factor as well for you like it does for a lot of folks. It's probably the closest to Hilton. I agree that Hilton Garden Inn is new and nice as well. I would choose between those two.

Where are you driving in from? If it was me, I'd do lunch in Ames then stay in Des Moines at night and go out for a nice dinner.

I agree. There are some signs of aging at the gateway, but it’s still pretty nice. And the beds are extremely comfortable.

Head on over to Marshalltown and hit up the pink flamingo. Where else are you going to find cable TV in your room?

Seriously though, I like Hampton Inns. The Hilton beds are phenomenal.

What is your definition of walking distance? Gateway is probably the closest but is still about 1.5 miles to Hilton.

Sleep Inn on the west side of Ames is a nice place. Right across from the Sukup basketball facility. I stay there every time I need to spend the night after a game.

We always stay at Best Western University Park Inn. It is cheap, nice rooms, clean and has a full breakfast. It is right across the road from Gateway on University. By definition (besides the Memorial Union of course) it is the closest to Hilton.

I don't think the Memorial Union has hotel rooms anymore.

I would not factor in walking distance into this as there isn't anything close enough to make it worth it. Parking is free and you'll have a short walk into Hilton. I'd stay at the Garden Inn on the West side as the East side hotels are older and you'll have a long time getting there when the games over.

We always stay at the Sleep Inn. They have a pretty good free breakfast in the morning too.

Just stayed at HGI. Really nice area of town but they're remodeling and it was LOUD, however, still a good stay.

I actually spent a month in this Hotel back in the 80's. I worked on a road crew and this is what they picked for a hotel. My roommates smoked pot and did 'shrooms all the time. I don't remember the strip club back then, but we got our paychecks on Tuesday and come Wednesday, some guys were asking to borrow money as they "paid for dinner" at the strip club.

Why need a hotel? You'll be going to a place where you'll have 14,384 friends that root for the same team you do...

Hampton Inn is about a year old. Nice hotel.

Agree, but the Hilton Garden Inn is a touch nicer, has a bar/restaurant, and is typically cheaper, while being close to some restaurants too.
