Hakeem Butler 1st round

Jerry Rice was a first-round pick by the 49ers (they actually traded up to get him, as they felt the Cowboys were after him, too) while playing at a Division 3 school, and recording a 40 time of 4.71. Scouts back then were beating the bushes for talent at most every school that fielded a team.

There must have been something working against Lazard in scouts' minds.....I don't know what else would explain their lack of interest. Drops were mentioned, as was his 40 time - but I just hope the Jaguars give him a chance, and he makes the most of it.

Mississippi Valley State was a D1-AA program when Rice played there.

I like the idea in the article but butler and DM will not go in the first round. If DM ran a true 4.4 then maybe but I don't think he will. Our best shot at a first rounder will be next year on the defensive side

It would be something if Rhoads’ left us a first-rounder in Butler.

Montgomery is elite at both elusiveness and pass catching so I could see him going high despite the speed. He’s got some elite skills plus an elite work ethic.

Montgomery is awfully good but keep in mind that Kareem Hunt was a 3rd rounder. He didn't quite have the publicity playing at Toledo but still. 1st Round would be darn impressive for either.

Rhoads may have recruited Butler, but Campbell and staff have developed him into the possible first round talent he is today.

I'm just assuming we lose both Montgomery and Butler after this season. CMC I'm sure is expecting that too, or he should be. They are both studs.

I agree but only if they get a guarantee and grades they will be drafted in the first 3 rounds which I think they will. I think both put up very good numbers this year.

Montgomery - 1200 yards 11 TDs fewer carries than last year
Butler - 1100 yards 10 TDs

Once Lazard went undrafted, I dropped any pretense of having a clue as to what NFL teams were looking for.

Hakeem is certainly a talented guy.

It was, and has always been his inconsistent hands. Butler has the same issue to overcome but he's a more explosive athlete.

With Lazard going undrafted, I have a very, very hard time seeing a Cyclone go in the first round.

That was a straight up shot at our program. If Lazard has the exact same career at a "name" school he's a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

Lazard got a lot of run early that he doesn't get at a name school. He was a program changer here. There is no doubt about that and there's nothing that will ever change how he helped this program in both Rhoads and Campbells tenures. He had weaknesses though. He didn't get great separation, he wasn't all that nimble, and he dropped balls both at ISU and through the evaluation process. You can't drop passes at the NFL level if you can't make up for it with explosive potential. That's why he's in the position he's in right now.

Having seen what happened at the NFL, I'm definitely walking away from my previous stance on Lazard. His game clearly didn't translate. He was given an opportunity and couldn't do enough to find a roster spot. I don't think his playing for Notre Dame would have changed that.

I also didn't realize that post was from so long ago.

A guy from Central Michigan went first overall not long ago.

I love Allan, but his problem was some of his known flaws (a lack of elite speed and ability to create separation) and his agent, not anything to do with Iowa State.

The NFL was happy taking KO in the second round, and he has had a great career.
