NFL: 2018 NFL Draft

Fair, but when do the browns not get roasted. I would think the value for #1 could be absolutely insane if a bidding war were to break out between the right teams. Particularly if someone wanted to go get Chubb or their QB of choice. Should be one of the more entertaining drafts in quite some time.

That's where the Mayfield to the Browns talk is coming from. I think John Dorsey floated that out to the Browns beat reporter just to see if he could get the Jets and Bills or some other team into a bidding war. IMO the #1 pick is still Darnold to Cleveland.

Lots of rumors this morning about the Pats and/or Saints potentially making big moves up in the first round for a QB. Wouldn't it be interesting if they were both after Lamar Jackson? Payton is on the record as saying that thye were prepared to take Mahomes last year before KC jumped up for him.

Somebody (Mayock? can't remember) said the only two players he would trade up to get in this draft were Roquan Smith and Derwin James. Sure hope my Packers can get James - he'd help the entire secondary. But Gutekunst will have to trade up to get him. The guy they really covet is Denzel Ward, but that's not gonna happen.

I thought they (Saints) were set on Taysum Hill as their QB of the future. Or at least that's what was repeated endlessly every time I saw them play on TV last year.

I'm not sure the bidding war would be THAT high this year with a few possible franchise QBs available. Teams could give the same bounty to the Giants at 2 and still maybe get the QB they really want, depending on who the Browns end up taking.

I think the Browns, with a new GM, will take their favorite QB at 1 for sure.
Oh I agree they will take a QB (Darnold) #1, but if I were them I would trade it...assuming I can get the required value (Later pick in the first round along with a second, third and a future first round pick). The Browns are more than a QB away from being relevant and Tyrod should almost certainly start the year as their #1 QB regardless of who they draft.

I don't know. If Darnold, Rosen, Allen, and Mayfield all go in the top ten and Jackson sneaks into the top 15 then that's going to result in someone slipping. Could be Ward or James.

That would be nuts and completely outside the Pats regular strategy. Would be interesting to see though. I'd rather the pats fall to mediocrity after Brady retires though. Fingers crossed.

I've seen more BYU games than most hardcore football fans and that guy is on borrowed knee time.

Yeah, I don't know what the Pats are up to. For as secretive as they usually are their interest in Jackson has been pretty evident.

What are you thinking the Vikes will go for? More defensive help? Bring in some guys to soften the blow if they can't resign all the current defensive stars?

Best Player Available? Maybe some O-Line help?

I actually don't have anyone in mind.

I would be on board for G like Hernandez out of UTEP to replace Berger (who just retired) so that is definitely a position of need. Could also go CB as the replacement for Trae Waynes / Mackensie Alexander in 2020, but I don't get the love for Jackson out of Iowa in the first round* (explanation for the Pro-Hawkeye crowd below). I think Minnesota would be best suited to make a trade with Cleveland or Indianapolis so Minnesota can stockpile some picks in the 2nd. Cleveland has picks 1, 3, and 32 in the 2nd round, and Indy has picks 4, 5 and 17. It would be a Spielman move to swap pick #30 for 2 picks in the 2nd round (for a total of 3 picks in the 2nd), may have to give up our 3rd rounder in the process, but I would call 3 second round picks a success, especially considering the financials facing the team down the road. According to Under the cap, the contract for a 2nd round pick next year would cost the Vikings $802,637, whereas a 1st rounder is $1,799,932. Signing 3 players to 4-year deals with contracts that max out in year 4 in the $1.5 million-range would be a slam-dunk.

*5 of Jacksons 8 ints occurred in 2 games (3 ints in the Ohio State thumping, and 2 ints in a loss to Wisconsin). He did have an int against Josh Allen Week 1, so I guess that's something, but I don't get why he sure-fire 1st rounder when Desmond King was a 5th rounder and his collegiate stats were just as comparable. I get the argument that King would have been a 1st rounder had he left his JR season, and that's what Jackson is doing, but I think "value-wise" that a 1st round pick on Jackson is a reach.

A potential for an upgrade on the OL would be great, and depth at CB/ nickel is needed. Rhodes is great but if he is t out for games, he's missing a series here or there. If they don't like what's there at those spots, LB or DE to replace Kendrick's, Barr or Hunter if they can't resign them all after next year.

Kendricks re-signed a few weeks ago: 5 years & $50 million.

Cowherd saying he's hearing the Browns will take Mayfield at 1

Wow. I know the Mayfield/Manziel comparisons aren't completely accurate, but there are still some similarities, especially with the attitude. You'd think the Browns would avoid a similar flame out as much as possible. That would be nuts.
