Trae Young

What’s amazing is that those who have said he lacks a certain level of athleticism aren’t wrong. I don’t think he is a phenomenal athlete by any stretch of the imagination. He just has amazing instincts. He’s like a chess player. He sees what is going to happen much sooner than anyone around him. Really smooth too. Everything he does looks effortless.

I’ll be interested to see how he responds to a team like West Virginia.

While he isn't the prototypical NBA body we have to remember that the NBA is a sports league but also entertainment. There will always be room for a guy or two in the league that is significantly smaller if he can play at a high level. There are a lot of fans who become big fans when they can root for the guy (underdog) who they can relate to. They can see themselves as the 6' guy who could make the NBA while they may not be able to relate as much to the 7 footer. The goal may be to win a championship but just as important is to sell tickets and merchandise.

Someone mentioned Tyus. It isn't an accident that that particular undersized guy ended up with the T-Wolves. A local kid who was once a practice player for the sister team Lynx making the T-Wolves roster? It is a great story that captures the hearts of Minnesota basketball fans. And yes, it sells tickets and jerseys.

If Trae can keep up play at anywhere this level through conference play I would not be surprised at all if a team took a shot at drafting him.
Jones should have stayed at duke another year imo.

People are already calling Young the next Curry

Young tied the D-1 single-game record with 22 assists, vs. NW State, along w/ 22 points. First player in two decades to have at least 20 points and 20 assists in the same game.

Others with 22 assists:
* Sherman Douglas, Syracuse (1989)
* Avery Johnson, Southern (1988)
* Tony Fairley, Charleston Southern (1987)

Young has four games this season with at least 20 points and 10 assists, as many as any player had in 2016-17.

Well he just schooled one of the best defensive teams in the country in Wichita State so I don't think he will have a problem with them. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see him destroy the press and WVU have to back off of it.

Really interested in seeing how big 12 teams defend Young, I'd trap early and hope he passes then deny, deny, deny. If he gets the ball back, you're in trouble. It's going to be fun to watch him play against everyone but ISU.

It always seems like low hanging fruit and I'm not typically prone to calling anybody the "next" this or that, but I can honestly see that comparison. His quick release and ability to get his shot off in limited space with seemingly unlimited range, his court vision and his bball IQ...Curry is the guy that comes to mind when you watch Young play.

I agree with the entirety of your post from what I've seen. That quick release is something all the little kids are practicing these days because they've seen how important it is to the success of Curry. It is a big reason he's done so well with a relatively wispy frame for an NBA player. The game I watched with Young, he did that as well.

It's early in the season, so he could hit a wall, but he really does seem to possess some of those rare qualities to see things before they happen, etc.
