Campbell era: Your 5-year expectation

It probably is the Dan McCarney team in 2000 that went 5-3 in conference and won 9 games including the bowl game and that was because we did not play TX and OU that year. I know we have some 4-4 records since then in Big 12 play. Even in the years we made bowl games it was because we got 3 or 4 wins in the non-conference
It's also "easier" now than in 2000:
1. In 2000 Nebraska was ranked #2 in the country (AP) when we played them. The 2017 team doesn't have to play a #2 ranked Nebraska.
2. In 2000 Kansas State was in their heyday as a national top ten program, finishing the year ranked #8 and #9 in coaches/AP polls. K-State is still good, but not near what they were then. The 2017 team doesn't have to play a #8 ranked K-State.
3. In 2000 Texas A&M was in the conference, finishing 5-3 in Big 12 play. The 2017 team doesn't have to play Texas A&M.

That tends to be swept under the rug, compared to the more-common argument about the relatively weak schedule that year.

At worst, assuming all other games are the same, if ISU had the other South rotation that season, it would've been 6-5 regular season instead of 8-3 (losses to KSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas and Tech — although Tech was 7-6, so that may have been winnable).

Probably another no bowl year this year, but I'm going to say a consistent bowl team after this year. With this new young talent, it's hard not to get excited about the direction of this team.

YES........but don't forget Akron! Ohio teams know how to play football.

You may have had a point had we been competitive, outside of 2 1/2 quarters against Nebraska, in any of those games you listed.

I'll never forget that homecoming game against a decent, not great, Aggie team. Playing for bowl eligibility for the first time since 78, and if they hadn't been offensively challenged, they would have beat us as bad as k state did later that year.

If your point is to be like mac and, for a very very very brief moment become the best of the bad teams in the conference, well I hope that this staff has higher goals than that.

Okay, I am going to color outside the lines here. Stoops retired from one of the most prestigious programs in the land. He even added more glory program and kept it relevantly clean.
He retires at a young age and moves to Chicago. Chicago! He is an Ohio guy.Oh, an Irish Catholic guy.
What is the closest big city to Notre Dame? It's that same Chicago.
Oh, wait ND has a coach. One they want to get rid of and prevent a fiasco like rhe last two firings.
So we give Kelly another year to right the ship.If he does so all is well. If not, well Bob might be bored with retirement and although he will always be a sooner, he can get back into coaching..
ND would have given Kelley plenty of time, but are looking to go in another direction.
What has this got to do with ISU. CMC leaves to be OC, Manning leaves to be OL coach.

Exactly, I'm not trying to diminish the accomplishments of that team. Heck I was going to ISU during that season and between that bowl game trip and the elite 8 basketball team that year I have some awesome memories as it possibly was the single best year in ISU athletics history with so many sports teams having great seasons. That 9 win team had plenty of talent: Rosenfels, Reggie Hayward, Ennis Haywood, JJ Moses, James Reed, Jordan Carstens who played quite a bit on the DL in his redshirt freshman season to name a few. The roster had some solid upperclassmen and some underclassmen who made their marks in years to come: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_Iowa_State_Cyclones_football_team

That being said they had the benefit of a favorable schedule. The #2 Nebraska team was mentioned, well the way our conference schedule currently is setup even if you miss out on the top 2 teams in the conference on a given year like we did TX and OU we still usually would have to play multiple ranked teams most years. That 2000 team played just 2 ranked teams compared to this past year we played 4 ranked teams (3 in the Big 12) in what was a down year for the conference. Obviously our 2016 team pales in comparison in talent to the 2000 team but the point is no matter how anyone spins your assessment is spot on that with TX and OU on the schedule that year we probably would have been 6-5 instead of 8-3.

I understand the gloom and doomers who believe CMC will leave if he has success here. Past history is hard to ignore.
But how many of you would have thought Iowa State would ever land Johnny? The basketball program was in the same state of affairs as football is now.
If Matt wins, and I believe he will, pay him and we don't have to worry about Ohio St. or anybody else.
Programs can change in Ames. We've already seen it.

No way!

Year four, so far, so good. ;)

Not dead yet.

Football is also alive and well.
Pretty interesting to read these posts 4 years later and realize how fortunate we are. And in retrospect these predictions seem weak and defeatist. CMC definitely HAS changed the culture and with it the fan perspective. So cool to be seeing this!!

See
2017 5 wins and a shot at a bowl game (depends on O-line and LBs)
2018 7 wins and a bowl game
2019 8 wins and a bowl game
2020 10 wins and a shot for a conference championship
2021 goes to tOSU (or something better), but doesn't leave the cupboard empty

He will get lots of offers, but I don't think he will bolt just for more money. It will need to be tOSU or a truly top-notch program.

Seems like this is pretty darn on the money except that whole 2021 funny business you guessed.

Yeah, @Cycsk was remarkably close. Reality was better than '17 projection; the rest is nearly spot-on. Swap the records of 18 & 19; in '20, would've been 10 regular-season wins with the pre-pandemic schedule even if CyHawk was an "L" (would have coasted past USD and UNLV).
