Not a great clip for Fred...

Not sure if already mentioned but Rose and Butler went off on the rest of the team after the game for their attitude, effort, etc. Had plenty of opportunities to mention the coaching staff but neither did.

Except Butler already has - and I think that he and Wade airing their gripes and dirty laundry to the press shows they have no respect for Hoiberg, and don't trust him to fix it. If there was respect for the team, coaching staff, and culture, they would keep it in house.

Wrong. You get Wade and Rondo, two dudes I don't want shooting on my team.
I don't follow it enough to really know, but I always thought Rondo was known as a pass first PG kind of like Monte. I wouldn't want him shooting either, but was that why he was brought in or was it to distribute?

Fred was successful because he was willing to take players who had issues elsewhere but could play the game. He was wildly successful with this, but to expect he would be universally successful is unreasonable. Just making the Royce White experiment work for as long as it did was an accomplishment unlike any other.

Can you imagine the backlash if Hoiberg had found a way to get Royce to the Bulls and then they experienced these struggles?

If Hoiberg gets fired, I'd be happy if Prohm tried to get Charlie Henry to come back. Dude is an offensive genius. Dunno who'd they move out of an assistant spot though.

I was just listening to SportsCenter where they were debating about Wade's comments. I didn't pay close attention to who the hosts were, but one of them said flat-out that Hoiberg is not a NBA coach, citing that he's had so many trust/control issues with his players to believe that he is NBA-capable at this point. The other two hosts said they didn't totally agree, but didn't go into it in much detail.

I'm not totally sure who I agree with. I don't really feel confident in saying that placing Hoiberg somewhere else (say, the T-Wolves) would make him a better coach.

That would really suck for Prohm. Some people are pining for Fred while he's coaching at a different level hundreds of miles away. Think how bad it would be with him sitting on campus.

I think Fred is done with college athletics. NBA coaching to NBA front office to swimming in his vault of money like Scrooge McDuck by the time he's 55. Good work if you can find it. Fred is a big boy and if didn't know what he was getting into, he should have. He'll be fine.

I am good with Prohm- like the guy. I can see a scenario where he has already fatigued of Fred's shadow and if Fred were now free again, Steve looks for a reset in the south. He gets free of the Hoiberg shadow, he gets to restart his clock at a new school and possibly even make more $$, especially if we make the show again. Clemson, Georgia, LSU and Mizzou all could have openings and have unique possibilities to a young coach who has family in Georgia and his wife's family in Kentucky. I never said that I want that to happen. Additionally, watch Billy Kennedy at aTm and his health. I hope this does not happen because I want him healthy but if he were to take a medical retirement, Prohm is a guy he wants to replace him there.

If Fred is fired, I think he is too competitive to have that be his last job, he will coach somewhere again. I always feared it would be Lawrence, KS where you really don't have to recruit as hard. Just a theory and one with many, many holes. Feel free to rip away

Nah, he'll find an NBA front office, right? I mean college coaching wasn't his dream, the NBA was (well that and getting super-rich since ISU had already made him rich).

I think it is silly to think you don't have to recruit hard to KU. They are constantly competing against the elite programs for the very best players. Do you think a player just drops in Bill's lap when his competition is the likes of Coach K, Izzo, Calipari, Pitino and Roy Williams? I have never met Self, but I talked to someone who has. This guy deals with coaches at all levels so he isn't a fanboy who would generally be star struck. He said that when Self came in the room it was almost an electricity in the room - his personality was that captivating. He would speak to a group and you would feel like he was talking exclusively to you. That is why he is successful recruiting.

That and things like player graduation gifts from donors.

Fact- it is easier to get a 4 and 5 star player to Lawrence
Fact- you get more pay for staff and you can hire better recruiters to take some of the miles that Fred had to take at ISU because he HAD to recruit guys from the beginning.

Fact- KU can get a later start on a prospect and still make his final list.

This is easier than at ISU- fact.

Prohm's roots are very much in the south so what you say makes sense. The only counter I will offer is that one of the reasons Prohm gave for jumping at the ISU job was the passionate fan base that followed and cared about basketball. I don't know if that was coach speak or an actual reason but if he meant it, that's pretty tough to find in football country, including all the schools you mentioned. I know those were examples and not all inclusive...just saying. It sounds like he wanted 'Bama though so it was probably just a line.

Also, I found a picture of Missouri's new logo. That whole place is a mess and I can't imagine who would touch that program.

Fact - expectations are higher both at KU and nationally for KU so the coach there better have a top 1 or 2 team in the conference every year
Fact - you'd better be getting some of the very top recruits and a few more from the next tier every year

How forgiving do you think the KU fan base and administration would have been if Bill had come in second on all of the very top echelon recruits for several years running like Fred was doing?

It makes me ill that I am having to advocate for Bill Self right now.

I guess maybe look at it another way. If Fred wanted to get the same recruits at KU as he got at ISU he could not work as hard recruiting. That isn't what is required to be successful at KU, however.

I haven't taken the time to read through all the posts, so sorry if I am repeating. But this is a bigger sign of Jimmy doing his own thing, because as has been seen in the past, Fred is one of the best at running plays for buckets out of TO's. So saying no to your coach, who has the ability to draw up a play for you in a late game situation to get a good shot, is a selfish player acting stubborn. Idk if I have ever thought, "what? no." while watching/playing in a game where the coach wants to call a time out with possession late in the game. I know Thibs likes to let them play and not call TO's in lg situations, but see how that worked out for his T-Wolves team that lost all 10 of their games decided by 4 or fewer points up until last weekend. If you have them, use them, stop doing your own thing Jimmy.

I still wonder what the KU faithful's opinion of Self would be if Memphis hadn't completely collapsed in that National Championship game. I know they love their conference championship streak, and rightfully so, but would it outweigh some embarrassing early March exits if they didn't have that big banner to hang and Self had the "best to never win the big one" moniker attached to his name? I think there would be more than a few that would be pretty restless.

I guess my point is that I'm agreeing with you. Some things would be easier for Fred at KU, but the weight of expectations would hang heavy. You never want to be the guy that follows the legend.
