He'd likely be a candidate to stay here longer than a mid major coach would with success. TJ doesn't seem to have NBA aspirations like Fred.

The low-level coaches haven't coached a game as a top-25 team, or in a league like the Big XII.
But it the biggest problem with this inane debate is that it's a resume debate, and much more than the resume goes into the hiring, especially regarding someone who has worked at the university for 7 years.
Prohm's NCAA Tourney team was ranked as high as 9th, and was ranked 12th going into the tournament. They pounded Colorado State in the first round and lost to Marquette in the round of 32.
How would that work out? Otz would coach and do hands on recruiting also? Or would he just coach and let assistants do the recruiting like most staffs do. If assistants do the recruiting then Otz is giving up his only claim to fame that he has now.
People want the best coach available...not the person that knows Iowa State the best.
You also have to factor in that TJ has experience with the current group and has learned from 3 different head coaches, has seen what works and what hasn't worked in those 3 jobs. I'm not saying I'm right or you're wrong, I just think it's for the betterment of discussion for that to be mentioned. I'm not necessarily pro-TJ all the way, but I'd at least like him to stay on staff and would be more than happy if he was named HC.
You don't have to be a smartass. He's big into recruiting and seems to love the college game.
I don't know that you can really ignore that TJ is a great fit with ISU and the mid-major guys might not be.
has TJ been around ranked teams? Not being sarcastic...his time here with Fred ISU wasn't ranked nor where Mdermotts teams.
Likely to gain a different perspective and experience just like anyone else would while working towards their dream job. Makes him a more attractive candidate for a head coach job.
He coached one game as a top 10 team and lost 3 years ago. Which was also the last time they made the NCAAs.
Now I know they got hosed this year and his record is impressive but just proving that you can cherry pick any stat.

People need to quit comparing every mid-major coach to Greg McDermott. There are 282 non-power 5 conference schools. Not all of their coaches suck. And we are targeting the one's with the absolute best resumes that we can find, then digging deeper.
Every single active head coach in the Big 12 started out at a mid-low major, including Bill Self (Oral Roberts), Lon Kruger (Texas Pan-American), and Shaka Smart (VCU).
