Another 40 minutes in the Phoenix airport. Haven't seen JP or JH yet. On the other hand, someone from Webster City was on my flight from El Paso. Don't see him at my gate.

I don't think Morris will be gone unless he is a first round pick and I don't think that's likely. But if that does happen it will likely mean ISU had an amazing year which is fine with me.

Two points

1. I doubt we have Monte.
2. It is not gutted. We will still have Cooke, Burton, Noskowiak, Thomas and Babb. We will need big men BAD. We will have to get them through transfers. But that is a very quality back court.

That's an ok backcourt at this point. You have an unproven pg, a guy who we haven't seen play after hip surgery, a project, and two guys in Burton and Thomas that would have to improve a lot to lead a team. Add that along with no big mean, and you get NIT at best.

Does anyone else think Fred may have damaged his reputation in coaching circles by having the "handshake" agreement before Thibs was gone?

At this point I think we can look back and the whole season and really see the chemistry problems this team had all year, which hadn't been an issue it the other years with Fred, tied directly to this. I truly believe this was in place all year long.

Fred's silence is confirmation.

His silence probably means there's something going on behind the scenes, but my guess is something on both sides (or 3 sides if you add the TWolves) is being worked out still. It's not confirmation he's gone yet until it's said - it's speculation.

God, I hope he stays at ISU. Pleaaaase.

So pretty much it would never be OK for Fred to leave?

See Billy D's tenure at Florida. I'm sure it still stung a little when he left but all they'd have to do is look at NC Banners hanging from the rafters and I'm sure that sting is gone. We get a L to UAB and KU clearing more space in their case for another Big 12 Conf champ trophy.

I agree that the the 1-3 positions will be fine in two years but they need big men bad and I'm sure they will get some. Probably a mix of JUCO freshman and transfer

I just can't grasp the mindset of some of you on here. Yes, Fred leaving sucks, but he's leaving you with a legitimate national championship contender. That will be very attractive for the incoming coach. He'll get a ton of talent up front and then can work the recruiting trail hard to keep it going. As an Iowa fan who isn't even sure if we'll make the tournament in any given season I would kill Nickelback for the roster you guys will still have despite Hoiberg leaving. If ISU makes the final 4 with the roster that FRED assembled will you still be incredibly petty? He's taken you to 4 straight NCAA tournaments! That's after McDoormat doing nothing for 5 seasons or whatever it was. FRED put you guys firmly into the national conversation. I'm just amazed that some of you are acting like he shot your dog. He's done a hell of a lot in 5 seasons and set the program up for continued success. SMH.

I hope we get the guy from Stephen F Austin. Runs a similar system, can rexruit, and knows the big xii well. Would be the perfect fit.

what a good way to leave, last game you coached here you got embarrassed by a bad team, thanks Freddy

It's the timing. He used a quick fix so he could get a job that he wanted and perhaps, looking more likely everyday, leave us in the dust.

Whether this is true or not, every Cyclone fan if told what the next five years would look like, and the chance to have a favorite player coach the team on top of that, would have taken it. Hoiberg did not use us in any way.

Well, then the players are not very mature about it. If you get axed from a contract for your job for example and you know your last day is in 2 weeks, you still push forward and do your job.

And not to mention clearing space for Diallo on their roster, as well....

At this point I've resigned myself to the belief that he's leaving and have more or less made peace with it, but it still sucks serious *****.

In the past I've used the phrase "God hate Iowa State" as a way of explaining all the misfortune and catastrophe as a way of trying to jokingly rationalize why this school and athletic program seemingly can't sustain any sort of lasting success, and it seems apt in this case once again.

I'm not angry at Fred, and I don't think he intended Iowa State to be a "stepping stone" when he was first hired, and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt when I write that this was a very hard (or will be very hard) decision for him. For his own sake, I hope he finds great success in a very demanding and unforgiving place (the NBA). I just wish he was doing it five years from now, or even 10. Best of luck to you Fred, if this is the choice you make. Thanks for the memories.
