Pre-Memorial Day Hoiberg NBA Update

How can people really think that Fred doesn't love ISU? Last season he postponed heart surgery he was in dire need of twice! Those surgeons don't say "hey you should probably contemplate surgery now" they tell you that it has to happen. He has put more on the line for ISU than pretty much anyone on this board.

Because ISU isn't Kansas, Kentucky, or Duke. Or anywhere close.

As much as we all hope it would be ISU is not a destination job. Even Fred Hoiberg is making that clear.

Look at the places they coach and their salaries. That's why.
If ISU had a strong history of Final Fours and National Titles, while paying their head coach $5,000,000-$9,000,000/year, then you wouldn't see coaches leaving.

FWIW, Roy Williams did leave Kansas for UNC. However, Roy was going back home to his alma mater in this case.

YOu think Fred is in a category with those guys? I love the guy but that's insane. It's just as insane to think ISU is the same as UK, Duke and KU. There is a reason Cal left UMASS for the NBA the first sniff he got, yet seems entrenched at Kentucky. ISU is more UMASS, than UK. Like it or not, that's 100% true.

My only comment to this is that Duke was nothing before coach K. Coach K made Duke what Duke is today. I think there are people that hoped that CFH would become our coach K, take a program that is not considered a national power and make them into one. I think if CFH stayed here the same way that coach K stayed at Duke, there was a good chance that could have happened. In CFH's 5 years he had already brought a bright light to ISU with a lot of media attention to the university.

I wouldn't really say they were nothing before Coach K, but he was definitely the one who got them were they are today and started winning Titles.

Prior to K they had 2 National Title appearances, 4 final fours, 6 Elite Eight's, and 10 conference championships.

I'm still pizzed Coach K himself wasn't our coach K.

You're right. But you have to remember that there are some "special" posters on this board
 
I'm in Minneapolis for the weekend and the KFAN team is basically setting up the welcoming party for Hoiberg.

Yeah, they actually went to the championship game three years before Coach K arrived and to the elite eight the year before he got there.

Krzyzewski went 38-47 during his first three seasons at Duke and people wanted his *** fired.
 
I don't think Fred skipping heart surgery is anything that proves his love for ISU. If you're in an industry where the most important and public part of the job only lasts 3 months, of course he would put it off. Cutting out in the middle of the season would not make him appealing to the NBA, either.

I see this happening. Perfect scenario all around. Head coach and then GM later. Don't think Fred wants to deal with Reinsdorf in Chicago, especially if Tibs goes who is one of the best coaches in the NBA. Go figure but the coaching merry-go-round in the NBA is the most chaotic in professional sports. Even after winning seasons and playoff runs, coaches get fired. Much more stability and security in Minnesota if he takes an NBA job, this year or next. IMO that will be Fred's terms and if not he won't make the move.
 
If MN was likely, wouldn't it have happened? Not sure I see what the holdup would be.

With Fred's experience in Minnesota's as an Asst. GM in front office, he knows all about contracts. I'm sure he is being very meticulous regarding specific provisions written into a possible contract regarding his future with the T-Wolves. A front office/GM position after he was done coaching would be what he would love to have and would seal the deal IMO. You also have to consider the children and schools to look into. Not just Fred's decision but a family decision. It does take time.
