Pre-Memorial Day Hoiberg NBA Update

I agree. The longer this goes on, the less respect I have for Fred. JP is to blame as well IMO if there is any kind of rift there, because JP should basically be doing whatever Fred wants within reason, but paying him about 4 million would be within reason IMO.

I think this is a couple of big egos going at it. But if Fred loves ISU like claims he does, then why not put a big buyout in his contract to go to the NBA? The T-Wolves or the Bulls would have no issues paying ISU a million bucks or more to get Fred Hoiberg. Those NBA teams have money like there's no tomorrow. So if Fred leaves, then wouldn't he want ISU to get compensated for that?

And if I were a big donor, there's no way I contribute any $$ for Fred unless I'm guaranteed at least 3 years out of him. If they are going to arrange a deal where Fred stays for one more year, then I'd say just let him go now instead. Our program will be "dead" for a year if Fred only stayed for one more year. No recruits will want to come here at all.

And the more and more I think about this, the more comfortable I am with TJ becoming the next head coach. Mainly because I'm not confident in JP's abilities to get anyone else, but also because I think the continuity might be more important than finding a "top tier" head coach that is going to come in and change everything and then this year's team takes a big step back because they are learning all new concepts.

This year will be CRITICAL for ISU basketball. We have the potential to make a run at the Final Four. But the only way that happens IMO, is if we continue with the same style of play that our players are used to. We can't afford to have someone new come in here and change everything up right now IMO.

I just can't believe Fred is going to leave the school he loves before accomplishing really any of his goals. One Sweet Sixteen is not all that much of an accomplishment really. Granted, it's better than where we've been for a while, and I'm grateful for that, however, I thought Fred was more of a competitor than that? Going out with a horribly coached loss in the first round to a UAB team that had no business being in the game with ISU is an embarrassing way to go out. I just thought Fred was better than that, and cared more about ISU than that? Guess not. His legacy at ISU will now be tarnished somewhat IMO. He'll still be a legacy of course, but just not like he could have been.

+1000 clonedude. i don't want him around for one or even two years. he is holding the university, the fans, and more importatnly the players hostage here. i am disappointed in his poor decision making here. 2+ million for what 10 yrs isn't enough??? buh bye

Actually the Bullz are. If they weren't doing their "terrible front office" act right now Thibz would have been fired the day after the playoffs ended for the Bullz and this would have been done 2 weeks ago.

Time to get a committed guy. Like Rhoads. No wait. I'll still take hostage taker Fred Hoiberg.

The Bulls are waiting for someone to trade for Thibs so they don't have to pay his buyout, thus the delay. Not a whole lot that can be said or done until that happens. I'd guess if nobody trades for him by weekend, they will fire him and eat the $16 million.

Sort of surprised how the NBA opportunities exploded this month. Thought Fred was pretty solid for another five years. Obviously he is through with college coaching and wants the pros. The money being an issue might come as no surprise as $5M is greater than $2M. So many people said this was not an issue. Well, guess what? Maybe the outcome of heart surgery also closed his timetable for coaching pros. Do you think he wants to retire at 50 due to health?

Here was my hope: CFH would stay in Ames until his kids were out of hs. Five more years would officially place ISU on the map of a legitimate basketball program year in and year out. If at the time of his children's graduation he chose to leave for any reason, we would be in a great position to hire a proven coach to continue what CFH had started. ISU would have name recognition and bigger recruits would want to play here just as they do for other current name programs.

Where we are: It seems highly likely that we lose CFH this year, if not now, in 1-2 yrs. Although he was defiantly increased ISU's value, it's my belief we are still a few years away from being a program that people don't look at as a flash in the pan.

Here's what I fear: After next year, we fall back due to the fact we have to rebuild. Whoever is placed as HC falls short of the success we are currently having and ISU becomes a middle of the pack team in the XII. Once the tv contracts for the XII expire, realignment talk starts again. I think it is going to be hard to advance our success in fb to a top team no matter who the coach is. If there is one sport that can keep us relevant and that we have shown we are capable of reaching a potentially elite level, that would be basketball. Being relevant in bb may allow ISU to keep a seat "at the table".

Look who will probably be on our roster for 2016-2017 and tell us why we won't be towards the cellar, especially with uncertainty at the coach.

I'm not going to write off 16-17 especially with an entire recruiting season still available to add to the roster. The back court will be above average and the front court at the very least can add role players from the Juco ranks. I'll take that scenario any day over the reverse situation.

The coaching staff will likely include TJ or a yet to be named someone who is thought to be an even better option. Whoever it ends up being will be in a position to sell front court playing time to potential impact Juco or prep players. They will probably bring in at least 4 post players. If they all end up being simply role players, the team is still at least bubble worthy. If one or more emerges as a standout, the team could make a run at the end of the season.

It's obnoxious to bring up already, but maybe he wants to go now, while he's young. It gives him plenty of time to test the NBA waters and return to ISU if he ever wanted.

Thanks, Paul.

Maybe the surgery went worse than he said....maybe he feels his timeline is now tighter....

It has nothing to do with money... I am embarrassed by a good portion of our fan base with all of this. The guy isn't holding anyone hostage... he's simply making a difficult life decision, that just happens to be on a stage that is public, and he is doing it on his own timetable.

He's always wanted to coach in the pros, he has a history with the Chicago Bulls (4 years of playing while in the prime of his career), he never once promised himself to Iowa State for his life.

Here's what he has brought ISU:

Longest Mens Basketball winning streak
Longest Mens Basketball Weekly top 25 Rankings streak
2 Consecutive Big 12 Tournament Championships
4 Straight NCAA Tournaments

All things that not a single other coach in ISU history can ever say. Give the man some credit, let him make a decision to go to the NBA, or stay with ISU. HE OWES YOU NOTHING! Quit feeling so entitled. It's more like you are holding him hostage with a gun to his head saying, Stay with ISU or I'll hate you. I'd want to leave too with the way our fan base is acting about all of this.

I'd much, much rather have Fred leave now and go to the Bulls than leave next year for the T-wolves.

First, recruiting would be dead for an entire year. It makes the job much less attractive for the next coach. Whereas winning this year with our stacked team will give the new coach cred going into the following season.

Second, it's the T-wolves. Come on. Even if Fred gave them a title it'd be hard for me to get excited about it. Whereas Fred to the Bulls would turn me into an NBA junkie. Yeah, obviously biased because I live in Chicago, but I did grow up in Minnesota.

Please Fred, stay for another five years or take the Bulls job now.

The hostage taker is now the hostage.
