Pre-Memorial Day Hoiberg NBA Update

I suspect that JP was a much more meddlesome hands-on athletic director back in the day. The type who would would sit down frequently with coaches for evaluations, expectations etc.

Seems to have matured into the role, and just lets coaches coach now.

Very happy to hear about #5. We should at least pay him or offer him what he's worth, and then if he still leaves at least we know that we tried. Honestly, I think he's worth $4-$5 mill/year to ISU.

That being said, #10 is troublesome. If this is just a 1 year deal, I would not back up the money truck. If he's willing to seriously commit long term, then pay him.

You only pay him that kind of money if the NBA buyout goes up significantly and I mean in the $3 million plus range. Otherwise he can go and we have a loaded team for the new coach to build off of this next year.

Only Iowa St could find themselves in the middle of a twisted up, confusing, three team grey area.

Normal coaching changes go: team A fires coach, team A searches replacements, team A hires team B's coach, then team B is looking for replacement, with the whole process being resolved asap.

Nope, not around here. Iowa St has to find themselves in the middle of a 'nobody can do anything without somebody else doing something first, but they can't decide what they want to do, or their trying to wait out the other team to create leverage' situation.

That's a good mindset. He's a human and can do as he pleases. Me as a Cyclone fan can be upset and see how this hurts ISU's basketball program. We will be devastated in 2016-17. Back to be the cellar dwellar and whipping boy of KU.

There's quite a few sunshine and rainbow pumpers on here that are more fans of Fred than ISU.

Why would ISU be a cellar dweller without CFH? Over the past 35 years it is clear that the McD years were the outliers, and we had two consecutive coaches not named Hoiberg have teams capable of winning a National title.

I do agree that people on here claiming we will be in great shape because of Fred's success are wrong. Fred has institutionalized no advantage for ISU. We have had a tremendous home court advantage for 3 decades and any success by any coach was going to see that. There is no "system" implemented that TJ can continue. Fred is the system, and the advantages he built leave with him. Fred's ability to deal with transfers isn't going to be easily taught, nor was his ability to straddle the line between having trust in players vs undisciplined play.

There is nothing secret or magical about how Fred deals with players or develops game plans or adjusts in game that he can simply pass on to TJ or anyone else that will ensure success. It's Fred's ability to do all of these things very well that have made him successful.

Beyond a year or two will be as good or bad as the next coaching hire. Period. Aside from Orr developing the fan base and creating a huge home court advantage, what Fred and other past coaches have done will have little to no impact once their recruits are gone.

Its somewhat like people looking at KSU football and wanting to use it as a blueprint for ISU. No problem, all you have to do is hire possibly the single greatest college football coach in history as the first step.

Yeah, well, we had an AD in really poor condition at the time.

Look who will probably be on our roster for 2016-2017 and tell us why we won't be towards the cellar, especially with uncertainty at the coach.

Some people around here are ridiculous.

I wouldn't be surprised if Fred has eyed the Bulls job... But it came open 2 years before he expected it to. So now he has to make a tough choicw before he intended to.

The problem with MN is as much talent they will have, they still won't be a contender for a while; 16 win teams don't turn around overnight. He would be coaching a marginal team for a few years at least.

Thought to consider. While we fans want info and this over with, and we want the principals (Jamie, Fred, Bulls Twolves) to comment and update, the agents and attorneys (sometime one and the same) are in full operational mode. Fred maybe able to push some, but he still has to abide by his contract with his agent, Jamie has to abide by what his attorneys are saying. Thus no comments or info, even if Fred or Jamie wanted to inform the fans. Doubt if Fred's agent even owns a CYCLONE hat, let alone a concern for our 2016 recruiting class. He is concerned though about his "rep", both for future clients and negotiating in the NBA. Millions are at stake (remember the Bulls and Twolves are involved), am sure there are breach of contract concerns by all parties, especially for talking "out of turn". It is a huge pain with agents, attorneys as the players in the contest, and not our ISU "team" but it is the modern sports ""business"

Sort of like Budenholzer learning nothing from Popovich to help him be successful.

As to 2016-17 to me I'm not worried with Fred at the helm. Recruiting is no longer long term. Us of any school should already have figured that out. If you have holes you fill them with transfers.

It's possible we could be just fine and dancing in 2016/17 but I'm only comfortable that happens if Fred is in charge.

Iowa State is in what's called the "mortgage situation". Our house is for sale but can't be sold until they sell their house, and they can't sell their house until their buyer sells their house. Rinse and repeat until someone either doesn't have a house to sell or has enough cash to have two mortgages.

that a long way to say "this sucks"

If Fred is running the show, I can't see us missing the dance at all in any year. I'm just going to assume that he can get something together to keep that streak going and going and going.

Totally agree. I am sure he did not anticipate the Thibs situation taking this long and these new rumors are simply a result of that. I think the rumor of him staying at ISU for another year is probably hurting his rep among the fanbase though.

Absolutely. It's quite clear he's exploring the NBA options and will do so in future years because he will continue to be pursued strongly by the NBA. Time to move on to the next coach.

What did JP do or not do with respect to Cael? Please elaborate.

I would also like to know Scott.

That's complete BS! You have no clue. Cael wasn't all about money. JP s*** the bed on that one and he is at fault for not keeping him.

I didn't say it was all about money now did I? I think money had a big part of it, but it wasn't the only consideration. PSU had a donor willing to pay whatever it took to get Cael there, ISU had no prayer of competing. Factor in the comments Cael made after leaving about it being a "better opportunity to win championships" and there you go. I don't buy the "its easier to recruit" out there due to proximity and number of recruits. Iowa, Okie State, Minnesota and now Mizzou have all proved you can do pretty well in the Midwest.
