Pre-Memorial Day Hoiberg NBA Update

I hate when someone tries to chime in that we all knew from day 1 what we were getting and he said the NBA was his dream jobs. That's a load of crap.

We bought in because we thought we finally had an ISU guy who if successful was so much an ISU guy (that he was already called the Mayor of said city) that he would be here for the long term.

Meh, it's life as an ISU fan. Even when we get something awesome we just get a kick to the nuts later.

There's benefits to both scenarios. Fred stays, it increases our chance of greatness next year.

Fred leaves, it makes the new coaches job a lot easier because he already has a top team, and can carry that momentum into recruiting and staying good assuming we don't flop next year.

Nope, unless you have the right coach that greatness won't matter. Look how far recruiting fell off after Larry took Floyd's teams to back to back Big 12 titles. Didn't mean squat because recruits didn't like him. And we were back in NIT and losing to Iowa on our home court. Yay! That was fun.

That's a good mindset. He's a human and can do as he pleases. Me as a Cyclone fan can be upset and see how this hurts ISU's basketball program. We will be devastated in 2016-17. Back to be the cellar dwellar and whipping boy of KU.

There's quite a few sunshine and rainbow pumpers on here that are more fans of Fred than ISU.

I don't get why people act like if Fred leaves ISU will never be good at bball again. The past successes are there. I mean yes losing Fred would suck knowing he could have brought us to new heights but it isn't a forgone conclusion that we will automatically suck after he leaves.

Here's my baseless speculation on this Fred's thoughts: Fred just had his second open heart surgery and spent last season at <100% (no tie!) because of his heart. He's not under any delusions that he can do this for the next 30 years, he knows his time is valuable and limited. He also cares deeply about ISU and the ISU Men's Basketball program. There is no way he thinks he's bigger than the program, or that the program success of the last 4 years can't continue with out him. I think leaving this year is an option to him because it sets the next coach up to begin with the cupboard stocked and have immediate success.

That is why to me there are only two acceptable options:

1. Leave now with the cupboard stocked.
2. Stay and commit to ISU long-term.

Stay for one more year is not a good option for ISU.

Because we've never been to 4 back to back NCAA dances, and looking at number 5. No other coach has had ever ranked in Top 25 ALL DANG SEASON. No other coach at ISU has actually put real fear in to KU of getting knocked off, hell, no other Big 12 coach has even really challenged KU like we have.

To me Fred was a once in a lifetime hire for this program and can't be replaced.

I disagree with the comment that there is not much Fred can do. Fred could give the ultimatum to the Bulls that he needs an offer in a designated amount of time. He does have the ability to put some pressure on them if they truly want him.

And if he has given such an ultimatum to the Bulls, you wouldn't know about it. It wouldn't be public info.

Additionally, Fred could make a public appearance and simply say he won't talk about any jobs that are not open. It's not as if coaches have not done similar things in the past. I think the fact he has basically gone into hiding and avoiding the media at all costs is what is frustrating to us fans.

I enjoy how recovering **** open heart surgery is "gone into hiding". Making a public appearance and not saying anything isn't better that resting at home and not saying anything.

Exactly. I can't believe some people on here are questioning Fred's love of ISU. I think it's pretty obvious this is not going down how he wants it but at this point, there isn't much he can do. Aside from coming out and making a statement, which could turn out to be a lie. He won't do that.

If you don't think Fred loves ISU, just look at last season. It tore him up. The dude looked emaciated towards the end of the year.

I will love Fred until the day I die, unless I stop loving him.

and to counter "Larry Back to Back" reply. No other coach could consistently build on his success in the recruiting world and have a stocked team year after year where it's a close toss up if 7th or 8th guy in rotation should be starting.

I'm with you here, but I was thinking a steeper calculation... Something more like his raise = 1/3 of the increase in NBA buyout. $333K raise = $1M NBA buyout bump. I still like CFH of course, but this process has helped us as fans switch from (maybe a bit too much) blind affection back towards a positive relationship, but based on business. Time to protect ISU first.

Seems to me you could make the buyout equal to his raise. Then we're made whole if he bolts after one year it didn't cost us any extra dollars. But I'm not an expert on how these things work so I'm probably being naive.

There are plenty of coaches that could dot that with this roster. If Weber could do it with Bill Self's roster at Illinois I'm sure an average coach would have great success next year.

Not to totally go off the rails...but...Did we make a big enough commitment to the wrestling program for Cael to stay? I think in retrospect we might've been able to keep Cael. I think it's apples & oranges.

We never had a chance to make a big enough commitment when Cael left. He was already the highest paid college Wresting coach while he was at ISU (I believe, may have been #2). He went to PSU and signed to be their coach before ISU had a chance to do anything about it. The nice hefty raise and "easier" ability to recruit there were what caused him to leave. Nothing JP could have done in that situation.

I'm leaning to the "he's leaving anyway, may as well be now" crowd. I suppose the caveat being - it depends on who we could get to replace him. Yes - he'd have the best shot to win with the team next year. But if we were able to get a top flight coach in here, I'd think they could do well in their own right with that talent available. And then give that coach a chance to compete before we face the depleted shelves of 2016-17. Perhaps even a chance to retain Monte. Some success to recruit with as opposed to new coach, no players after next year.

Bolded: This is the part that worries me. Not because Iowa State couldn't achieve that ... it's the "will it actually get done."

Who's angry? I am firmly in the acceptance group. The only bad scenario for me is if Fred comes back for 1 year.
