I'm driving through Ames on Friday on my way to Omaha. I'm torn between stopping for lunch at Hickory Park or West Street Deli, assuming West Street still exists.

Embarassingly, other than a layover in Miami when flying to Mexico, I've never been east of Chicago. But, the wide open west fits me better anyway.

Before I drove to California to ship my car, the only state i'd been to west of Nebraska was California, and it was for a business trip.

Hickory park for lunch, stash a sammich inna cooler for dinner/afternoon snack.

Boom, problem solved. (assuming, of course, that for a successful solution, both involve pork fat)

I'll tentatively mark it on my calendar.

I think I've been to or through like, 27 or 29 states? My goal is to visit the countries of my ancestry though, so like England, Germany, Norway, and France are really the big ones (I'm a mutt).

Also, my drinks offer goes out to anyone coming out here that wants to take me up on it. HipHop, I think you're honeymooning out here aren't you? Don't know if you'd want to on your honeymoon, but if so, just let me know.

Yeah we'll be in your hood/on your island the first few days of our honeymoon, but we might be... umm... busy. I'll shoot you a PM if we are up to going out for drinks or anything.

Dang it. Now I'm hungry again. You aren't helping me here people.

I'd love to do some ridiculously long road trip some time and just go all over the US. Dat work tho

there was a story recently about the perfect road trip to hit most of the more well-known US spots in every state.

We had an international intern do a giant road trip a few years ago. He started up here and I want to say he went south first to Texas, then the Canyon, Vegas, San Fran, the Sierras, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Mt. Rushmore and back to here. Not sure if there was anything else in there.

I could have just shipped my car from Iowa, but figured when else would I get a chance to drive across the entire western part of the country with no real motive? Driving through Lake Tahoe was absolutely beautiful too.

It also saved me 600 bucks, even after the hotels, food and gas. Plus I got to write all of that off on my taxes.

CF Road trip. Rent a big conversion van, slap some CF decals, and go around the country for 2 weeks. Profit?

If we're bringing KC, we're gonna need something more like this:

And things may get awkward if my Foxhound is terrorizing her cats.

Yeah we're all set. Got some good activities and excursions planned/booked. We should have a lot of fun. I've never been to Hawaii before so it should be fun.

Is your Oahu one in Honolulu? I know you were just talking about getting whatever there since you were only going to be a couple of days and how you weren't even going to rent a car and just use shuttle. Depending on where you're at, I could probably give you guys some tips on good places to eat within walking distance.

Road trips were some of my greatest college and post-college-pre-kid memories. As long as people aren't afraid to be spontaneous (road trips should not be over-planned), everyone should go on at least one kick-*** road trip in their life.
